OT - 10mm EAA Witness arrives

Post by O.S.O.K. »

It got here today and I just picked it up from the funshop. This is the one that I bought with the money procurred from the sale of my Ballester-Molina .45 - a good "trade" I think :)

I really like the finish - darker than I thought it would be:

Image

Anybody know what "wonder finish" is? Nothing on the EAA web site - looks like electroless nickel kinda...

I like the way it feels in my hand - doesn't feel heavy to me at all but definately heavier than a glock but less than a 1911. The sights are different that I expected - thought I'd get the standard "tall, skinny" rear sight and what it has as you can see, is a novak-type snag-free type sight. Rear dots are white - front is red. To drift adjust the rear sight, you unscrew a couple of allen set screws. Nice.

I didn't realize that the action is double action so long as the slide doesn't move back - in other words, you have second-strike (and 3rd, 4th, etc.) capability - a very good feature IMHO. If the pistol fires normally and the slide comes back and chambers a fresh round, you are in single action mode.

The pistol can be carried with a round in the chamber and the hammer cocked or uncocked with the safety on - the safety blocks the firing pin.

The rifling is indeed standard, cut rifling. Great for cast bullets!

Mag drops freely when you push the release in all of the way.

Controls are all snag-free and don't cause problems for carry.

I like it!

I'll post a range report once my dies arrive and I can get some ammo loaded for her. :) :D

Neat pistol Jac!

I've been wanting to get one in 9mm for IDPA with the 18 rnd. mag.!

Looks huge. How does it compare size wize with a 1911?

Looking forward to a range report!

I think they are large compared to 1911s which is why I've held off getting one in 10mm. I'm not THAT fired up about the 10mm cartridge anyway...

Thanks.

This is a little chunkier than a 1911 with standard scales installed. About like a 1911 with slightly fatter ones.

It's about 6 ounces lighter than a 1911 though. Seems very well made. I'm looking forward to shooting it - come on BBT!

I keep mine with one in the pipe on half cock with the safety engaged. That half cock brings the trigger back just far enough for me to get the proper finger placement without concious effort.

That's right - a third option - bullet in pipe, hammer at half cock and safety engaged. Did'nt think of that one. Click the safety off and the hammer's half way back already without completely compressing the hammer spring....

Right before the Clinton AWB I bought a Witness 9mm (mostly out of principal, I didn't own anything "high cap"). The gun was really put together nicely, felt great in my hand, was 100% reliable and very accurate. It was also BIG and I didn't shoot it well. Meaning, if I picked it up and placed it in my hand like a Bullseye gun, it was a laser. If I picked it up fast or drew it from a holster, I shot well left or right (one of the other). That quirk and the fact that it was a "big gun with little bullets" made me sell it.

I've thought about it longingly since then and started to think that my "shift" problems were due to the rubber grips. So.. last fall I tracked down another Witness to shoot in USPSA Limited-10. Ya know what? I kind of had the same problem. :? BUT.... with some fiddling and some testing I found out the problem was with how the gun fit my hand. I used putty epoxy to reshape one side of the front strap and the gun fits me perfect.

I load tons of 45 ACP, so that's what I went with rather than a .40

Yep, the grips are rather thick really. They don't have to be... kinda like a lot of 1911's have the fat scales - and you can get thinner ones.

O.S.O.K. - That's a fine looking pistol. I tend to be a "heretic" about semi-auto pistols, not owning a 1911 but instead have a passel of Ruger .45 acps. The EAA Witness may be the best natural feel I've experienced as far as how it just seems to fit perfectly in my hand. Yours looks beautiful, and I agree that the sights on yours are a definite improvement over the little rear blade I've seen on others. Really good looking piece.

Hope to find out that it shoots great for you. Been thinking about one in .45acp for awhile. Let us know how this baby shoots for you. - DixieBoy

I'd be all over one of those if they had a better looking trigger guard... :?

Have had it's brother in .45 for years. Great gun, very underrated. Finish on mine has held up really well, looks just like the day I got it. I still prefer the .45 but to each his own and congrats! My shooting friend has the Kimber and my Witness is just as accurate and just as dependable. Not knockin Kimber at all, his is one nice gun.

It's designed as a "race gun" for IPSC, so function tops form.

Well, I think the low-slung slide really makes it easy to shoot rapid/accurate double taps. Even the increased recoil of the 10 mm doesn't seem to phase it.

AWP - I thought you wanted one of those? Or is it another model?

Looks like a nice no-nonsense auto. I am a firm believer in "keeping it simple".

While "experts" have said the double action for the first shot feature is not needed, I find it a great safety feature for carrying. (yea, I am known to carry a 59 'smith)

It sure does look like Colt's electroless nickle, but with all the stuff out there today, who knows.------------------------Sixgun
