444 Marlin and the Lyman 429649

Post by 6pt-sika »

I just recently "acquired" a Lyman 429649 two cavity mold !

This thing is a 325 grain FN GC mold . I think they were originally made for Contenders that had been rechambered to 444 although I could be wrong !

Anyway I have this one for use in one or more of my 444 Marlin's .

Has anyone here dealt with this mold before ?

I plan to try it in my 444P which has the ballard rifling with the faster twist ! And also one or more of my older slow twist micro barreled rifles .

I think I'll first try water quenched WW's . In the past my tried with the NEI 429330GC with air cooled WW's in the micro barrels have been keyholes at 50 yards . But in the 444P they shoot well enough ! My thinking is if I make them harder on the outside they should grip the micro barrels beter and not strip out as the aircooled bullets seem to be doing to me so far .

Later I'll try the 429649's aircooled in my 444P I think .

I wanna get both these straightened out before I get my hands on one of the Ranch Dog 432-350GC molds ! And if I can get that thing working there is a man on Marlinowners in Sweden who recently had Mountain Molds make him a 432-400GC ! I just might have to take the next step as well

I never was a big 444 person and still aren't for the most part . But I gotta say I sure do enjoy messing with the cast bullets in the rifles that were made 1975 and earlier 8)

Sounds good, can't wait for the report. I looked at the gunshow today and the only older 444 I saw was "AA" prefix. I know you are looking for "AC", so I'll keep watching.

I appreciate the help !

Yep I'm looking for a "AC" and I'm sorta looking for the early 444S from the years 72 , 73 and 74 (the first 2 digits in their seriel numbers would be 28,27 and 26 respectively). I already have a pair from 1971 and 1975 . This model and the original 444 were very similar in that they both had double barrel bands ! Of course the 444S was pistol gripped and a 22" barrel . But they only made them with the barrel bands from 71-75 !

My 444 with the "AA" prefix was a little pricey at the time I bought it ! And in the pics I saw I couldn't make out the overly reddish tint to the stock since I'm color blind ! But other then refinishing the rifle was in remarkable shape . Now since that time I have seen no less then 5 really nice "AA" 444's . If money was alittle easier to come by now I might be talked into a second "AA"

I didn't used to be, but got a used one, and realized that unlike my .45-70 and .45 colt guns, I didn't have to inventory another "44" bullet diameter since I already had .44 Magnums. I saw a wildcat .45-70 with .452 bullet diameter, and sometimes wish rifle and pistol "45" bullets were the same. I suppose if I really liked light bullets in the handguns it wouldn't matter, but in a handgun I'm not usually concerned about flat trajectory, and like a big slow moving hole-maker, preferably below the speed of sound so if I touch one off without hearing protection I can still hear later.

Besides - I'm sure it means NOTHING to a game animal, but if I accidentally  shoot my 100 yard gong with my .45-70's I get a BIG dent and it will nearly punch through the 1/4" ones. My .444 (with factory JSP loads) makes the 3/8" gong look like a giant paper-punch got hold of it - no dent, just a neat round and clean hole. Dunno why, and maybe if I loaded up hotter .45-70's they'd do the same. Again, I doubt a coyote, deer, or elk would care, but it is just cool.

It's a good thing you're not much on the .444. If you were, it could get expensive...

I never said "I wasn't much on the 444" as I pretty much like them all !

The 444 is just not in the top of my favourites list !

And FWIW it already HAS gotten a little expensive

Incidently I was able to setup my Lee pot outside today and do some casting !

Was using straight wheel weights nothing added !

Also had a 5 gallo bucket beside me to drop them all in as I wanted to water quench .

So I started out casting about 150 of the Lyman 429649 . While doing that I had my NEI 5 cavity mold pre heating . This one has two cavities for the NEI 429-310GC and three cavities for the NEI 429-330GC . Ebded up with about 100 of the 310 grainers and about 150 of the 330 grainers .

Have them sitting on a table right this moment drying and I'll maybe start lubesizing them tonight or tommorrow ! Then load monday or tuesday and to the range wednesday
