Since we're posting new stuff!

Post by marlinman93 »

Thought I'd post pics of the three new ones I bought from one of our fellow forum members.
These are:
An 1894 Marlin saddering carbine, takedown, with 20" half octagon barrel, in .25-20 caliber.
Image

A 1889 Marlin rifle with 28" special order full octagon barrel, in .38-40.
Image

And a Frank Wesson third variation single shot, in caliber .44 Extra Long, with 30" barrel, and extra grade wood. The forward "trigger" is the relase for the barrel.
Image

Thanks Heath! Just a wonderful guy to deal with!

?, can you make or get .44 Extra Long for the bottom one? I am really starting to get into SS rifles but allot of the calibers of the older stuff seems near impossible to get/make.

Beautiful trio. I don't think I have seen a Wesson Rifle. Got ammo for it? Real partial to that S.R.C. T.D. It amazes how much good, old stuff turns up. 1886.

JWG,
The .44 Wesson Extra Long is the same as the .44 Ballard Extra Long. I already have a Ballard in that caliber, so I'm set up to reload for it now.
I make my cartridges from .444 Marlin cases that I run through my lathe to take some of the diameter off in the thickest web area from the rim to about 3/8" up. Then trim them to 1.63" and load them up.
Once I made up a hundred cases it's a snap to reload after that.
If a guy wants to get into oddball calibers it's easier today than it ever was! I could have simply purchased brass from several makers like Bertram, Rocky Mountain Cartridge, or a couple others. Dies can be purchased for just about anything, and C&H4D is very reasonable on specialty dies.
I'd just rather make them, if I can.
Thanks for the kind remarks guys! Nice to share with fellow levergunners.

Nice 1894, but didn't carbines have blued receivers and a barrel band?

Yes, every Marlin 1889 or 1894 SRC I have owned had a blued receiver and a barrel band. I'm not sure how to classify this gun, as it has a carbine buttstock and buttplate, plus a saddlering, but the rest is a takedown short rifle.
So what is it then? A saddlering carbine takedown short rifle?

The 1894 brings to mind Johnny Cash's song "One Piece at a Time..."
Doubt whether it came home in a lunch box though.

Yes Mike, it's just a weird rifle, and that makes it even more interesting to me! I was looking in my safe at the various pistol caliber Marlins I have, and there's only two out of ten that are standard guns. An 1888 in .38-40, and a '94 in .44-40 cal.

I like that Wesson SS. Ever since I found/read those articles from Ned Roberts and Col. Mayer I've had my eye out for one of those. They don't seems to come in easy-to-find calibers, though. Yours looks like it's in decent condition.

I like the short rifle a lot too. That's a neat little package for sure.

Yes, surprisingly this Wesson retains a bit more finish than most I've seen in the past. They usually had plain wood, and this one really has some deluxe wood too.

I think I saw a picture of the Apache Chief Cochise's son with this rifle. I thought it was weird cause it had two triggers. jd45
