In-the-shell peanuts

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Mundane subject, I know, but I am having a hard time finding edible in-the-shell peanuts available for retail. The Hampton Farms peanuts that seem to be everywhere are small, over-roasted and lacking in taste -- nothing at all the like the much bigger peanuts I grew up eating and a far cry from the large, flavorful, carefully roasted peanuts at an MLB ballpark with their big, nutty-tasting nearly-white meats.
I know there must be some excellent regional brands out there. We used to have a brand in Oregon -- Hoody Peanuts -- that graded at least a B+ but I believe that outfit went under.
Hampton Farms bills their peanuts as "fancy" but the only thing fancy about these miserable excuses for an honest goober pea is the fanciful lies told by their advertising department.
OK. Laugh if you want to, but I miss sitting down with a bowl of roasted in-the-shell peanuts and spending a blissful half-hour.
I will probably have to resort to ordering something from Amazon ...
I would be ashamed to let my Texas-born Methodist grandmother even see these peanuts they sell today. She grew up with peanuts and fish fries on the ranch up on the Canadian and loved to crack peanuts with her grandkids, giving a big smile when one of us got a triple.

I get mine fresh roasted peanuts at the local farmer's market. Nothing like right out of the roaster.

As has been advised try to find local. Around here we usually have to go across the tracks as they say to get the real deal however black folk usually specialize in seasoned boiled instead of roasted. Being heavy by virtue of being sodden, a pound bag of boiled only nets about a quarter cup of peas when shelled. Just enough to make you hungry for real food which is the plan. Tyrone sells boiled peas out of the back of his pickup right next to lekeshia's rib & pulled rolling pit. A trip across the tracks costs a minimum of four yankee sawbucks for peas and ribs and beverage. Then there is the problem of removing the barbecue sauce from your chin whiskers.

One option.....

Lord I know whereof you speak Bill. The 5# bag of Hoody's we got from COSTSO was a vital staple all during my tree cutting career and they have disappeared, also leaving us Oregon boys stuck with those puny Hampton Farms things. Gotta' be a workaround?

Sure hear you Earl. Ray, thank you for your suggestion. I found a more budget friendly option: five pounds of in-the-shell jumbo Virginias from the Whitley Peanut Factory for $37 shipped, and will report.
I mentioned this peanut thing on my FB page and an old Arcata High School pal and I started reminiscing about the wonderful peanuts they used to sell at Candlestick Park in San Francisco back when Willy Mays was still playing. Those set a high bar.

So it ain't just me?
I keep a big tub of shell peanuts beside my big chair in my gun room. I have an old Red Dot can for shells, and like to have some with a frosty cold one while watching old movies.
Unfortunately, like Bill said, all I can get are the lousy Hampton Farms garbage. While it's great living in the boonies, sometimes it sucks. Everyone here lives below the poverty line so the only thing our one store stocks is the cheapest stuff they can find. And there's usually little of that too.
It would be nice to find an Amazon or mail order solution.
Of course, I'm poor too......so there's limits. I DO have all my teeth though.
Maybe that's why the stores here don't have a lot of peanuts? Locals can't chew em. :D

Haha,

was going to say, here in Virginia we are never lacking for peanuts. I live in the opposite side of the state that peanuts are farmed and even up here, it's easy to find Virginia peanuts. ENJOY!!

Well hey, I also got my Whitley order in. Now to make sure the beer stock is adequate...

Thanks for your attention to this matter, Bill

Atwoods sells some in a plastic bag without any information as to who supplies them. Better than Hampton Farms, but still not as good as what you could get when I was a kid. Bummer.

This reminds me of the time my uncle Chuck took me to a circus.
A peanut vender came by and my uncle bought me a small bag of peanuts in the shell.
I had never been to a circus and had never seen a peanut.
So I popped one in my mouth and started crunching on it but immediately started spitting it out.
He seen what I was doing and said no, no, you have to open the shell to get at the peanuts inside.
Lesson learned.
