Had some fun with a double 410

Post by mickbr »

I can't wing shoot worth a hoot but the fella instructing me could. Surprised what the little 410 can do busting clays.

Also introduced to a heavy load of 3/4 of shot, which is pretty much a 20ga payload. It was no.5 birdshot and based on what it did to some pine boards apart from good pest defence I would rate it as a self defence option. Jeepers that little shot column is acting like a big blob still at 15ft.

I'd put recoil about half a 12 gauge field load as it's less powder and a little slower, apart from being lighter.

Maybe everyone already knew all this :D . I've had 410s before but always saw them as a small pest gun.

Mick the .410 gets little of the respect it deserves. And I can't believe what the guys shooting Federal tungsten loads can do to turkeys at 40 yards!

Mick I used to use Remington 3" #5 in my High Standard SKEET gun for jump shooting ducks on a buddies pond. Of course that was before the non toxic laws regarding shot . With these new tungsten loads I would try them on ducks.
The biggest issue with a 410 in my opinion is most are choked too tightly. If it's a long full choke they aren't too bad but if a short choke, think tubes, then they tend to blow patterns all to heck.
You are right about payloads being equal. 28 ga are mostly 3/4 or 7/8 oz. I shoot International Trap and the required load is 24grams of shot, about 13/16oz to break targets that must make 76 meters distance to be a legal target, speeds of targets are 60 to 80 or more mph!
I shoot 3/4 reloads in my 20ga Parker for pheasants and chukar, they are just as dead when I hunt my 28 or 410.
The 410 is NOT an experts gun as many say but it does make you a bit more concentrated when shooting!
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
