Double rifle in .480
I tried some more tame loads in this gun but it won’t shoot to the same point of impact unless stepped on pretty hard.
With 10 gr of Unique the barrels cross and print about 6 inches apart at 25 yards.
But with the Hornady factory 325 gr XTP load it cuts the same hole.

Re: Double rifle in .480
Seeing this and the earlier posts reminded me of watching Jim Clark on the telly build a double rifle on a CZ fowling piece. I think that one was .45-70 if my memory serves. I tried to find that show on y.t. and was unsuccessful but in the process I found this interesting channel.....

Scott, that's a lovely double rifle. I find these critters fascinating, but I am on a beer budget.
Do you have or have you seen a copy of Graeme Wright's "Shooting the British Double Rifle"? Good stuff.

I am not familiar with that book.
Yeah, this gun is really way out of my league. But it’s so darn cute.

Re: Double rifle in .480
I'd deer/hoghunt with that any day! Cool factor in spades!!
I'd like to have a double with hornet, bee and 25-20 barrel sets! Just for charging groundhogs- they can be dangerous!

Re: Double rifle in .480
This is fun.
Good friend Cannon Watts sent me a box full of sized and primed .480 brass. Much of it looks brand new.
I’m experimenting and looking to find a load with the 400 grain Lee cast bullet that will regulate in this gun.
I am loading some of Hunters Products 412 gr bullets over a variety of powders to see which might get me there.
Loaded .480 (21 gr 296) next to a 412 gr flat point and a factory Remington .45 Colt.

Re: Double rifle in .480
10 gr of Unique behind a 412 grain cast causes the shots to cross even at 25 yards. The three on the right are from the left barrel and the three on the left are from the right barrel. Velocity 1120

A 420 LFN over 19 gr of 296 shows promise. 1230 fps

Re: Double rifle in .480
13.5 gr of HS 6 makes it hard to open the action and that’s not a good thing with a double rifle I have read.
This is a very light rifle and I was looking for something a bit more comfortable. But this one wants to be pushed harder.

Re: Double rifle in .480
I'd stick with the 296 loads.
It's the velocity range that matters, if you can duplicate the factory ammo it was regulated with it should shoot very well.

I have seen and fired some very nice doubles and drillings, but as a retired GOV guy don't own any and as an OLD guy don't want to carry one.

Not like any I have used before. I always just assumed they were all heavy, and why you had GUN BEARERs in Africa.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 4:19 pmThis one probably weighs about 5 pounds and has 16 inch barrels. It’s easy to carry.

Re: Double rifle in .480
19 gr of 296 under a 415 gr bullet yields great results. On the second set of shots I called the one that went to left.
This is a thumper at 1270 fps.

Looks like you found the right combo Scott! If I had that double I'd spend a lot of time stalking hogs.

Re: Double rifle in .480
I need to shoot it at longer distances and adjust accordingly. I’d like the bullets to come together at 50 yards or so.
Thus far all of my shooting has been at 25 yards.

Re: Double rifle in .480
Oh, I thought you were shooting further.
On your target with 19gr of 296 are the bullets crossing or is left the left barrel and right the right?
I would say if no crossing then it's time to add some distance and figure out what is happening.
Also, how are you shooting this? Off hand I hope, doubles do not play well with benching as they don't particularly like pressure from underneath. I'm sure you know this already.

I don’t own a bench. Never have anything like that handy when you need it.
I’m shooting with the forend in my off hand and resting the back of my hand on the rail of my pickup bed.

Re: Double rifle in .480
The way this gun is built and balanced it seems to be a really great gun for snap shooting. So hogs in close cover is probably the best pace to use such a rifle.
But I think it’s powerful enough to use out to 100 yards or so if I find an accurate load that is regulated.

So far the best load seems to be a 420 gr LFN GC over 19 gr of 296 for 1230 fps.
But I fired 42 rounds this morning and I feel like I’ve been in a fight.

I feel your pain Scott, at 5 lbs I'm sure it's lively in regards to recoil. Kinda like shooting shotgun slugs, a few are ok but anything more and it just gets abusive!

Re: Double rifle in .480
Fortunately I don’t think I would need to shoot it too much in a hunting situation!
I just want to lock down a good load closely matching the Hornady factory load but with a hard cast lead bullet.
I find that I need a little taller front sight so I have ordered a variety from NECF.

Brilliant of the maker to allow you to change fronts!
Is the rear a shallow V like on a dangerous game double?
