Unwanted 'friends' when you own guns...

Post by AJMD429 »

.
It drives me nuts how when some folks find out you own firearms, they literally invite themselves to "come over and shoot sometimes", or ask "what all kinds of guns do you have...?"

Now these aren't people you've been introduced to by a mutual friend, or met at a firearms-oriented event, or somehow have any other legitimate connection to, or expectation of trustability from. The ones I'm talking about are ones like in my case a new patient (of course I find out later with a criminal record and a diagnosis of schizophrenia with paranoid delusions) who sees the UPS guy drop off a big heavy package (Champion Target Texas Star I got myself for being a Good Boy and daring to save a bunch of money by fixing my car - and succeeding in the savings by actually not screwing the repair up), and of course one of my employees says to another "Looks like Doc got some heavy boxes today - probably a bunch of ammo..."

The patient's dad is with him (even though he's an adult) and literally says "I used to run them hills where you live at - haven't been down there in a long time, but we ought to come down there and do some shootin' - I think my wife and son would get along better if they got some time together like that..."

Now MY callous attitude is that if you want a place to shoot, then either get a job and buy yourself some land (in this case preferably far away from me), or join a shooting range. Don't expect me to suddenly befriend you just because you 'need' a place to shoot. I worked my butt off and made many a sacrifice to have the privacy of my own modest 100 yard range out in the swampy mosquito-infested swamps of southern Indiana, and by the kind grace of God giving me the mind and body and motivation to work hard, it is MINE...!

I also get driven nuts by employees who don't seem to realize that people overhear what they say, and it has consequences. I am friendly and close with my patients once I get to know them, but my life isn't meant to be on public display.

Come to think of it, LOTS of things 'drive me nuts' these days - it's getting to be a pretty short trip....

BTW here's the new target setup - I'll post a 'range report' once I can get it set up. Sadly, the path to the range is between a swamp and a steep hillside full of briars, and has a partially-fallen deathtrap tree hanging 40 feet overhead that we have to clear before access is very safe.

Come on Doc, just load some ammo and shoot the tree down! Even better tannerite and blow it up

I'm always leary of 'new' folks when firearms are the subject, I keep my mouth shut as much as possible.

I would stop having ammo, shooting accessories sent to your office and then have a meeting with your staff and explain that under NO circumstances do the words ammo or shooting is used in front of patients.

I don't usually have those problems as I do all I can to not allow myself to be seen with firearms cases, firearms, or anything gun related around my neighborhood. If I'm going to the gun show, or the range, or hunting, I back my car up to the garage and make sure I check to see nobody is walking by, or outside when I load. I don't talk firearms with strangers anywhere near my house. I'm fine doing so at the gun show where strangers don't know where I live. None of my neighbors know I own guns, and I keep it that way. And nobody comes over to my house whose not been a friend for a long time, and I know has similar interests.

I’ve never invited anyone to my private range and I don’t intend to do so. I enjoy my solitude.

I also remember a fine Texas boy who got killed taking someone shooting. Chris Kyle was his name.

I agree on the need to be more private for sure.

As far as the 'family' range - it's pretty much for 'family' and close friends.

I have coached about a dozen patients of mine who were victims of sexual-assault, though, so they and their family could be coached in an unintimidating environment along with me and either my daughter (an ER nurse with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training) or her husband (a State Police Officer) could be there as well, to provide a female perspective and legal reassurance as well as basic training.

It is rewarding to see a timid woman who hasn't ever shot a firearm at 8 AM, and then by 1 PM she grins with confidence after hitting a 5-gallon bucket at 50 yards with a 44 Magnum... That experience is very difficult to create at a public range, which is why I make an exception for those patients.

Not too many folks beyond immediate family and friends I have made through the
shooting club know I'm into guns. 2 guys at work, maybe. A couple of others at work
who've retired.

I just don't advertise the fact. Or the big safe.

I had a patient who was pretty much silent about his firearms, and he said intentionally put his gun safe in the garage instead of interior of the house where guests would see it (I'm thinking why not in a closet or in the bedroom...?). I guess in a previous home he'd had the safe in a 'den' type room and whenever they had company guests would spill over into that room and some were urban anti-gun types who would make a big deal about his g-g-g-g-guns.

Anyway, they moved to a new house, and he located the safe in his garage, but didn't give thought that although dinner-guests weren't likely to go out there and see it, every time the garage door was opened it was visible. Before he got a chance to bolt it to the floor/wall (the first thing I'd have done for sure), someone pried up his garage door while he was at work (garage doors are usually very easy to defeat) and loaded out the whole safe...!!!

Now another person (neighbor) had his house up for sale, and hadn't moved his gun safe yet, but had emptied it of guns. He un-bolted the safe one weekend, and since it was heavy and going to require help to move, he put a bunch of books in it that were also heavy, just to make them easier to move all at once. Some burglars broke in, and although his wife came home and interrupted their theft, they'd made it down two flights of stairs (one more to go) with the safe full of books. He kind of wished they'd not gotten interrupted, because it would be hilarious to think of them getting the heavy safe to their place, and torching or sawing it open, hoping to find a bunch of guns, and just finding . . . . . a bunch of reloading manuals and books about African safaris and so on...
