Project at the house

It gets awfully hot here in the summer and the garage even hotter. So I built a small garden shed in the back yard and I’m framing out part of it for my air conditioned loading room.

Our problem (in Indiana) is that the humidity is so terrible - in the winter any exposed metal gets condensed moisture unless the metal is hotter than the air, and in the summer, even though the metal is warm, the humidity is so high everything rusts.

Really good 'climate-control' may be the answer here, but gets so costly. So..........anything that can't tolerate moisture must stay in the house. (On the other hand, that's more convenient for me...!)

Electrician will come out this week and after that I’ll spray on some closed cell foam insulation. Thin I’ll panel it.

Nice Scott! Think about peg board, the you'll have the ability to hang stuff on the walls.

The a/c unit in my shop kicked the bucket last summer, I need to replace it...

Not long after our son and his wife moved into their house near Ft Worth, my wife and I drove down and I helped him build a reloading area. He has a 30 x 50 ft steel building next to his house so we built a workbench that went about 25' across the back, made a right angle turn, then went another 10' along another wall. It turned out really well. He put an A/C unit in and put 30' of LED lights over the workspace. He covered the walls with masonite and pegboard. He's a lot neater than I am; I would have probably covered every horizontal surface with my stuff but he has kept it tidy.

When my wife and I built our present house in 1996, we built a 2 car garage for my toys facing north and a 2 car garage for her cars facing west. There's a room between the two measuring about 12 x 15' that's my loading room. It's my man-cave, my sanctuary and I hang out there a lot. When we lived in town 30 years ago I built a cinder block loading room in the back yard measuring about 12 x 12' and it really was a nice place. I put in a range hood vented out the back wall which allowed me to cast bullets inside. I do miss that but I don't want to do that with this house. I'll just continue casting in the open garage door.

Scott, I normally spend the last few hours of my day in my workshop. There's no TV, really no noise at all. There's an old worn out recliner that fits me perfectly and shelves of books. When I'm not reloading, working on or cleaning guns, I'm reading old shooting classics or outdoor adventure books. It's my sanctuary. I admit there's some clutter but I must like it.

I bought a steel door and frame for the interior door so I can put a deadbolt on that room.

Perfect! I don't have a steel door but I did have the builders put in a solid core door and strengthened latch plates with long screws that go into the studs. Crime in this area is virtually non-existant and the house has security cameras and a burglar alarm system. I'm comfortable with it.

We did the one-inch spray foam in my wife's She Shed. It is amazing how well it works. You will be happy with it. (except the cost)

That's the problem I have. My basement is on the damp side with a 5' ceiling. I feel like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I've set up some shelves in the barn for my ammo cans and have a spare room on the second floor to build a new bench for reloading gear with plenty of room for some shelves to store components. Need to get on it, but have other projects to finish first.

Thank you. My wife has a craft room in the house, but she crafts everywhere. There’s a method to my madness. She would feel too confined in my little space.

make sure u insulate, they awful hot in summer and cold in winter

Peg board is nice but with plywood on the walls you have the ability to hang anything you want anywhere you want.

When you're reloading, are you one of the guys that is in total silence or do you have a radio/ stereo, TV on just for some background noise?
I tinnitus that can get really bad some days and if I don't have something on in the background it will drive me insane.
When you're younger, people warn you about shooting without hearing protection, but no one ever says anything about how bad power tools can be!

I loaded my first 50 rounds in my new digs last night. So much more comfortable than loading in that hot garage.

Don't forget InLine Fabrication if you get tight for space. Their stuff saved me.

I cut two inches off the back of this bench and three off the front. Made a big difference in this small room.

I put a thick coat of polyurethane on the wood after sanding. It should set up overnight and I can install the machines tomorrow.
