There's no such thing as having too many guns, but....

Post by 2ndovc »

I've found two over the last couple of days that one, I couldn't find, and this SA Garrison that I completely forgot I had. It was in a back pack that I hadn't unloaded since the move.
One of those things, when you're looking for something you need and find something forgotten about. :D

The other one is a short barreled H&R that was left in my barn. Neither one had any rust or marks that hadn't been there, but I started thinking about what else I haven't seen since the move.

With the heavy storms lately, I've lost power several times. I spent the last couple of days, making sure all of the rechargeable flashlights and lanterns were charged.
I have one large, dual fuel generator and one small 2800 wat Subaru that always works, but need to do a little maintenance on both and fire them up for a bit. At 10-11pm it can be kind of a hassle ( I know, First world Problems), but was wondering if anyone had one of the portable solar generators, and how do you like it?

I'm betting you're not all that far behind me. The issue is mostly the ADD. When I was tested a month ago, I scored 9 out of ten. I knew it was bad, but no idea it was that bad!

About 5 or 6 years ago I shot in a fun match, 25 skeet, 25 ATA, 25 wobble and 25 Olympic trap. For skeet I shot my Redheaded Step Child, it's an unmarked 12ga o/u that was a box of unfit parts when I got it. Anyhow a few weeks after that I remembered I hadn't cleaned it and proceeded to tear the house apart looking for it. Yes I looked in my safe many times but it was not here! I called the club where I shot, nope no one turned it in. I called the PA State police local office. I had to drive the hour out to the barracks and fill out a report. About 6 months later I'm in my safe and what do I find?! Talk about being a complete idiot! I then had to swallow my pride and call the police to admit that I didn't lose the gun. Worse was when I admitted to my shooting buddies that I had it all along.
And no I haven't lived that down.
Oh and it was cleaned when I found it in the safe!!

I've never found a gun I had forgotten I had owned, but oh what a joyous day as a lad finding an overlooked dime in a jeans pocket. That was good for a 7-cent Superman comic book and six pieces of two-for-a-penny black licorice. Boy I am old!

Well ... remember my Forgotten Single Six. I forgot about it for almost 20 years! If John Linebaugh hadn't called me I may have never remembered it.

I don't have a portable solar generator, but from what I hear they provide very little wattage, and for a very short period of time. So if all you needed was some LED lights to see they might be fine, but don't count on them for much load, or to provide much for very long. I have a 9500 watt dual fuel generator, and love it!! We can run the whole house just like we do on utility power, and it runs all day on a tank of gas. We shut it down if power is still out at night, then refuel and start again the next morning.

I've never forgotten I owned a gun, but I've forgotten plenty of ammo and brass.

Jim, you got that Single Six story posted somewhere? Sounds interesting.

It must be great to find it so easy to be that judgmental of someone you don’t know or what they have been through for the last year and a half.

I spent June and July 0f 2022 at my oldest daughter's place in Oklahoma. They live 'way out' in the eastern hills on Cherokee Nation land. The property belonged to her husband's grandmother and has been in the family for over 100 years. I made a shooting range on their property about 100 feet from the front door and it's really nice living like that! There are deer and coyotes and wild pigs and bears etc. etc. all around there. They are about 5 miles off the main highway.

So while I was there I woke up one morning with a strong feeling I needed to buy a new gun. Now I did not want a new gun and had not been wishing or thinking about one. It was like someone invaded my thoughts and feelings and was trying to get me to buy a new gun. I prayed against it .. I tried other things ... but the feeling persisted. Now I have nothing against buying a new gun. At that point in my life - as of right now - I have guns I still have to wring out. I don't want or need another ... right now. And this was almost like a pushy salesman trying to sell me something! After a week of this I said out loud one day, "IF YOU DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE I AM GOING TO TAKE THE MONEY I WOULD SPEND ON A NEW GUN AND SEND IT TO MOZAMBIQUE FOR THE MISSION WORK THERE!"

And the feeling persisted.

A week or so later I was back home in Texas and I wrote out what was for me and my bank account a rather large check and sent it off.

AND THE FEELING STOPPED!

I received an email from my friend who is overseeing the work in Mozambique and he was excited about getting the check. I have been helping him ever since I came back to the States. We are helping some of the young people get their degrees in various areas. One is becoming a medical doctor, several are going into nursing, some are going to Police Academy, one is studying to be an architect ... all good kids and hard workers. He said he had some bills come up with the kids in University and had been praying for extra funds and my check came at the right time. That is always good to hear.

Then a week or so later my phone rang and it was John Linebaugh. We had not talked in some time so we spent a few minutes catching up on each other's life. Then I asked, "What can I do for you?" John said, "I am getting ready to retire and I was going through one of my gun safes and found a Ruger Single Six you sent me back in the early 2000's!"

I was blown away! I had completely forgotten about it. I had sent the gun to him with the idea of converting it into a 5 shot 38 Special. I had a hunt scheduled in Alaska and we put off talking about it. Then I got busy the next year with a Safari in South Africa and the year after that we traveled to Mozambique the first time. I forgot all about the gun and so did John.

I told him, "Just keep it. You've had it longer than me." But he said no, he was clearing his books and was going to send it back. To make a long story a bit shorter, I eventually had him send it to Gary Reeder. I had Gary cut the barrel to 4 5/8" and put a Ruger Super Single Six front sight on it and widen the rear notch. Gary did that ... put his "Deep Dish Crown" on the barrel and sent it back to me. I had an all-steel ejector rod housing I put on it and have been having fun with it ever since.

So after all the fuss I still ended up with a "new" gun!

I was told years ago that God has a great sense of humor and things like this have proven it to me.

I left a Sig P238 in my hunting bag one year -- put the bag away and proceeded to feverishly look for the 238 thinking i had lost it

8 months later pulled the bag out to get ready for the next season -- voila

--

I have decided i have too many guns to keep up with, so i have been selectively "gifting" some to friends and family.

A Remington 870 and Winchester 1300 - both short barreled police style guns - went to my brother and nephew , and a down on his luck Army buddy was gifted a Glock 19 . Is a Gen 5, but no optics cuts so i have been gravitating towards red dots on carry pistols so i was disenchanted with the iron sighted 19.

Made me feel better giving it to a friend than just selling it
