I've never forgotten I owned a gun, but I've forgotten plenty of ammo and brass.
Jim, you got that Single Six story posted somewhere? Sounds interesting.
I spent June and July 0f 2022 at my oldest daughter's place in Oklahoma. They live 'way out' in the eastern hills on Cherokee Nation land. The property belonged to her husband's grandmother and has been in the family for over 100 years. I made a shooting range on their property about 100 feet from the front door and it's really nice living like that! There are deer and coyotes and wild pigs and bears etc. etc. all around there. They are about 5 miles off the main highway.
So while I was there I woke up one morning with a strong feeling I needed to buy a new gun. Now I did not want a new gun and had not been wishing or thinking about one. It was like someone invaded my thoughts and feelings and was trying to get me to buy a new gun. I prayed against it .. I tried other things ... but the feeling persisted. Now I have nothing against buying a new gun. At that point in my life - as of right now - I have guns I still have to wring out. I don't want or need another ... right now. And this was almost like a pushy salesman trying to sell me something! After a week of this I said out loud one day, "IF YOU DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE I AM GOING TO TAKE THE MONEY I WOULD SPEND ON A NEW GUN AND SEND IT TO MOZAMBIQUE FOR THE MISSION WORK THERE!"
And the feeling persisted.
A week or so later I was back home in Texas and I wrote out what was for me and my bank account a rather large check and sent it off.
AND THE FEELING STOPPED!
I received an email from my friend who is overseeing the work in Mozambique and he was excited about getting the check. I have been helping him ever since I came back to the States. We are helping some of the young people get their degrees in various areas. One is becoming a medical doctor, several are going into nursing, some are going to Police Academy, one is studying to be an architect ... all good kids and hard workers. He said he had some bills come up with the kids in University and had been praying for extra funds and my check came at the right time. That is always good to hear.
Then a week or so later my phone rang and it was John Linebaugh. We had not talked in some time so we spent a few minutes catching up on each other's life. Then I asked, "What can I do for you?" John said, "I am getting ready to retire and I was going through one of my gun safes and found a Ruger Single Six you sent me back in the early 2000's!"
I was blown away! I had completely forgotten about it. I had sent the gun to him with the idea of converting it into a 5 shot 38 Special. I had a hunt scheduled in Alaska and we put off talking about it. Then I got busy the next year with a Safari in South Africa and the year after that we traveled to Mozambique the first time. I forgot all about the gun and so did John.
I told him, "Just keep it. You've had it longer than me." But he said no, he was clearing his books and was going to send it back. To make a long story a bit shorter, I eventually had him send it to Gary Reeder. I had Gary cut the barrel to 4 5/8" and put a Ruger Super Single Six front sight on it and widen the rear notch. Gary did that ... put his "Deep Dish Crown" on the barrel and sent it back to me. I had an all-steel ejector rod housing I put on it and have been having fun with it ever since.
So after all the fuss I still ended up with a "new" gun!
I was told years ago that God has a great sense of humor and things like this have proven it to me.
