Ultrasonic cleaners

Post by 2ndovc »

I have a small, pistol size, ultrasonic that I bought from Harbor Freight a few years ago to clean several Yugo M57s that were heavily packed with cosmoline. It did a great job breaking that stuff down, but I can't find the little bottle of additive that came with it.
I have an S&W 442 that I had loaned to former stepson #2 when the covid hysteria was in full swing and recently got it back now that his father has given him his own guns to take home.
Anyway, the short story is, for the last five years it's been sitting in his garage and whatever it had been lubricated with (I bought it used at a show) has completely seized up the action and it could use the ultrasonic treatment.

Question is, what do you guys use in your ultrasonic cleaners?

Thanks for the link! I thought I had read somewhere that dish soap worked well. I think someone had mentioned Simple Green as well at one show or another, overhearing the conversation.
My memory for stuff like that, just isn't what it used to be.

Hornady Ultrasonic Clean Solution. Works a treat on just about everything I put in there. Even will take off hard scale fouling from my C&B stainless nipples. On a blued gun I recommend you not use the heat function, as it will, after a while take the bluing off. Don't ask how I know!

Oh, darn! Another trip to the gun shop! :D
I've been waiting for them to get one of the new Marlin .44 Trappers in. I did look at the new Savage lever action .22LR the other day. Just about the smoothest working lever I've ever handled, but it's so ugly it would scare the bark off a tree as my dad used to say. Decent price, but just couldn't get past the looks of that thing. Makes a Henry look attractive!

I have a small one for parts. Most of the time I just use water and Dawn dish soap. The only thing I don't like is that it has a fairly short built in time. My usual method is to put parts in and start it. Then every time I walk by I run it through another cycle. I'm constantly amazed at the crud that come off of "clean" parts. On a couple of used guns it performed amazing "trigger jobs" once things were reassembled.

I probably have the same model, Jason - or at least it came from HF as well. I use it primarily for cleaning the barrel and cylinder of cap and ball revolvers. Put it through a couple cycles, then clean it with Ballistol as normal. :D

Short delay in the experiments with the ultrasonic.

This is what happens when hillbillies start thinking their builders. Insulation? What's that?
The addition on the back of my old farmhouse was probably done in the late '40s, to '50s looking at the construction style and lumber used. Probably redone in the '90s with the garbage plastic PVC plumbing that decided to freeze and break at 3AM last Thursday morning. This place is usually as quiet as a cemetery but I kept hearing something and then the water pressure pump kicked on a couple times so I got up to have a look around.
Water all over the second floor bathroom and then down through the first floor. What a mess, spent hours cleaning up what I could after getting the supply shut off.
Kept at it for a while then thought to myself, I work for an insurance company for crying out loud, what the heck an I doing this for?
Got on the phone around 7am with a friend that has a Mitigation company. Still had to wait until Friday to get their guys out because of all the claims they were getting in. Called my boss to ask what I should do and he told me to get it started and he have another adjuster work it since for some crazy reason I can't write my own claims and checks!
All torn out and mostly dry now. Still some damp lumber. Plumber is coming out next week to eliminate the PVC. Going back with PEX, better product and far more durable. An inconvenience, but at least I get a start on the bathroom remodels I was planning anyway. Too bad it didn't take out the kitchen too. It's going to be next on the list.
I did get to the gun shop to look for Griff's suggestion on cleaning agents, but they were out. A couple of the counter guys suggested the dish soap as well so I gave it a try this evening. I did help, still need to take the side plate off and give it a good scrubbing, and run it through again.

“Stuff” happens.
I wanted to redo them both anyway.

I did forget to mention that while I was at the gun shop there was a Mossberg 930 in the used racks with a decent price tag on it.
I said to my friend that works there “ Let me see that poor man’s Benelli M4” he looked puzzled for a moment and then grabbed the 12 gage.
He said it had been there awhile and he would see what he could do. Bobby came back out and said how’s $475 sound. I told him that it sounds like sold to me.
I’ll run a few rounds through it tomorrow. It sure weighs a lot less than my Benelli M4

As one whose business was water systems, use either CPVC schedule 80 or copper. PEX has been around long enough now that some issues are starting to crop up.

Sure it's quicker, easier and cheaper. But copper and CPVC are stronger and much easier to insulate. Should you decide to go with heat tape copper is the only real choice.

Or, and for heaven's sake don't let the use crimped fittings or shark bites if you do copper.

Yes, the Shark bites are well known in the insurance world. They have their uses, but not behind drywall.
My plumber wants to do everything in copper anyway, I'm just paranoid about torches and fires. I've seen it happen too many times, but the kid is a pro and we'll be cautious. I'll have to look up the PEX issues. I have a rental property that was broken into and stripped of all the copper. Had it all redone with PEX with a big sign on the back door "All plastic plumbing, no more copper" It's worked well for 20+ years.
Life is just a series of setback. You learn, fix the problem and move on, I guess.

Appreciate the feedback!

We’re on our second Lyman sonic cleaner both were the larger size . Anyway to begin we used the Lyman solutions for brass or steel whichever we were trying to clean . In the last two years we’ve gone to a high octane cleaning solution the stuffs called I think Evergreen and it works well on both . And a good bit less expensive .
