Re: 348 Winchester for Big Bears
People were shooting bears of all types long before the .348 hit the scene, as another poster said the bear doesn't seem to mind what they get shot with. I'm sure the .348 would be very effective on bears. If I was going black bear hunting here in Minnesota, I'd use my .444 Marlin with the 265 Horna...

Re: Loaded for Bear
That's an awesome rifle - never have seen a 99 in .375 Winchester, loaded as you are that should be bad medicine on blacky! Good luck.

Re: Modern 45-90
405 grains at 2400 fps is .416 Rigby/Remington territory, that's gonna hurt both ways.

Re: This time with a levergun
Looked for years for a Savage 99 in .250 for my wife to hunt with, they were just too expensive at the time for my pocket book. I thought it would be a fine caliber and rifle combination for whitetails in our area as the majority of shots are under 75 yards. The Marlin 1894 in .357 kind of fills the...

20" barrel? Looks like a handy woods gun for bears and elk. Nice to see another manufacturer pick up the .444 Marlin, its a fine versatile cartridge.

Re: Lever #4: .356 Winchester
Nice find! Great caliber. Not so much on the butt pad, you are going to feel those 200 grainers go off both in your wallet and on your shoulder! Never understood why the .356/.307 didn't take off, seemed like pretty good cartridges - wonder if they'd do better now with the (semi) resurgence in inter...

Holy stuff! The one dude was shooting while the guy was 'riding' the buffalo! Lucky it wasn't worse, lot of adrenaline flowing. Amazing video.

Re: Marlin (Remlin made in 2019) 1894 CS, .357/38 lever gun
I have a 1894CS made in early 2019 as well. I've shot it quite a bit, shoots great, really fun to shoot those .38 specials, less recoil than my .22 magnum. I've taken 3 deer with it - the .357 does the job but I have better choices for deer as it seems pretty anemic even at relatively short range (3...

A bucket list rifle for me for sure, that or an 1886. That steel butt plate has to leave a mark though! Beautiful rifle.

Re: This years deer hunting
BenT only about half way - really west central - Otter Tail county. I heard one guy south of me saw wolves, more coyotes around here. Deer harvest was down quite a bit it seems, not sure why, seems like plenty of deer (my wife got one with her new Blazer, all that safety stuff and none of it designe...

Re: This years deer hunting
JBowen it was the old school 265 flat point. I happened to be using the factory Hornady Superperformance load this year, which I've chrono'd at an honest 2400 fps out of my 22" barreled .444S. It speaks with authority on both ends! I've handloaded some too, at 2150 or so fps, and that works jus...

This years deer hunting
Took adventage of the early doe season in late October and shot a small doe with the .357 1894. It has a red dot sight on it this year, and I don't care for it. Next year I'll either go with some type of peep/ghost ring sight or a low power scope. The doe was moving forward at the first shot with th...

Re: .38-40 WCF
Never shot one, always wanted to after I read En Woodcock's book "Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper". I'm probably not quoting exactly, but in it he says if you want all the power and recoil to go with it, go ahead and get a .30-30, but the .38-40 was all he needed. Would love to have an ol...
