Sold for $4,525. That would be a high price for a 73 in that condition. However, that's a bargain for a 1st Model 1873 in that kind of condition.

Great advice from Griff. Go to some matches and see what folks are using . In many cases, folks will let you try their guns, and will certainly share ideas and experience with you. I don't think you'll get but one opinion on this; A. Uberti. No matter who imports it, they're the maker of choice. If someone mentions Chaparral or CDNN, it'll likely be negative or questionable. Cimarron, EMF, Taylors, Navy Arms & Dixie Gun Works, AFAIK, they've all imported Ubertis. What Gri...

The 45-60 is a fine cartridge, and certainly enough for black bear. However, the Chaparral 1876 has a reputation for poor/inconsistent quality. Some examples are great, and others are "projects". If you want to get an 1876 in 45-60 (or any other caliber) I would recommend the Uberti versio...

I use a Dillion 550B for all of the rifle and pistol used in CAS. I reload all shotshells in a Mec. While I can reload rifle ammo (45-70, and 30-06 etc.) on the Dillion, I usually reload that stuff on an old Lee hand press.

There are significant differences between the internal parts of the 71 and the 1886. Winchester, in order to simplify (lower costs) production, redesigned the 71 with fewer parts than the 1886. To my knowledge, the carriers are not interchangeable. I suspect your problem may be related more to OAL t...

The design of the 71 incorporates some changes made to the action of the 1886 which resulted in a smoother feel for the 71. I have both in original and Browning versions, and the 71 has a smoother feel to me. Notice, I did not say "better."
