Thanks guys, and a belated happy birthday to Shasta. Been deer hunting, tough to find does(in range anyway) this late in the season. No luck so far. IIRC rust bluing will blue unplated post 64 receivers quite well. I seem to remember one of our members (probably on the long gone "old board") did one that way with fantastic results. Doubt it would work as well with one of the iron plated ones unless the plating was removed.

Maybe I'm old school, but if we are talking scoped here, your 358 has the situation well in hand for 300yards or for that matter any of the others(depends a lot on how you load your 38-55). The Buffalo Rancher I used to work for arrowed a whitetail buck this year that scaled 200# field dressed. I'll bet the one I shot last year was heavier than that one. Axles too wide? I'm pretty sure the frame dimensions have been standard on large trucks since the early 40s. I'm gonna give you "my opinion". Most of those old trucks used a vacuum brake booster(boosted hydraulic brakes) that doesn't work right anymore, that is darn near impossible to get parts for, darn tough to work on, is a real pain to retrofit(newer version you CAN find parts for) and really...

When I have a bullet like that I seat them deep enough to crimp over the top. You may have to reduce the powder charge a bit with harder bullets pushed to near maximum.
