My apologies to the forum

Post by AmBraCol »

Hobie requested I take over duties on the forum for a while, he has other fish to fry right now. And just two days into my tour of duty haulin' out trash the computer took a nosedive (figuratively speaking). In spite of tight antivirus/antimalware etch plus a regular tweaking of the registry via various tools to keep 'er up and running, Mickey$oft Windoze Xtra Putrid locked up tighter than an unlubed cartridge case rammed into a rusty sizing die. Couldn't even boot into "safe mode" To make a long story short, I was able to boot up with Ubuntu Linux on a USB memory stick, do a backup of vital work files and then do an install of Ubuntu Linux on the old machine. BUT that took me a while (first to decide to give it the ax and then to actually do it) and this weeks been extra hectic, besides having to get used to relying completely on Linux instead of simply playing with it as I have over the years.

The good news is, I'm getting the trash hauled out and Hobie will be back at the helm before too terribly much longer. Please be patient as the next few days will be busy for me. I'll drop in as possible to take a look and carry out trash, but if anything untoward is going on, please drop a note to my personal e-mail address to let me know. Image I've not had time to access my usual webservant address in a while and I'm not sure when I'll get the account set up to be checked regularly. (Still sorting out e-mail options under Linux)

Well, I could chastize you guys for "not earnin' yer pay", but since you're doing it for nothin' (we're a bunch of cheapskates here on the forum, I guess... ), I guess I can't complain any.

Sounds like you did what you could, and the forum didn't crash or anything.

We still kept a thread or two at the barely-sub-brawl level, and posted some guns-with-slippers pictures, just for sentimentality, until the bosses got back on-line...

Y'all are quite welcome, although my own contributions lately have been minimal at most. :D Younger son is getting hitched on Tuesday so the next couple days are also 'iffy' as to forum time. It's my pleasure to do what little I can to help things run smoothly here.

Well, since Jack can't read big words, just let me say that I'm purely apolectic over your apology. None such required. I was sorta havin' fun with the spammers.

AmBraCol - I have no idea what you are talking about but it seems you have it under control.

Thanks for your hard work. Much appreciated.

I feel your pain Paul. Even not considering your payscale, you & Hobie do a great job managing this site.

I had the mother of all virus hit this box a couple months ago with similar results. I did have all my pictures/music backed up but am still putting the email stuff back and there's a lot of bookmarks that are gone forever. I made backups of all my emails but like normal MS stuff that didn't work. I don't know why I bothered, MS backups have never gone back into the same MS operating system, should have known they wouldn't go into anything else. I lost my address book in its entirety so if any of you want to be back in my address book send me some mail.

I too went to Ubuntu. While it takes some getting used to, it's nowhere near as tough as the older linux distros. All in all, it's actually been pretty easy except the standard email program in 10.04 LTS was a bit of a pain to set up. One of the other Ubuntu/Linux variants I tried before settling on this had Thunderbird in it and I should just put that on here but haven't yet.

Actually, that does bring up a good point. Is it time for another forum fundraiser?

Paul, don't sweat it. I'm amazed you and Hobie have the time and thankful you do!!!

Around the first of the year or so, we'll let folks know when with plenty of time. Last time we managed a two year time slot on the server. We'll see what happens this time.
