Re: Range Report: Original Winchester Model 53 44-40
I was at Basic Training, Fort Dix, the summer of '69 and talking to my family back home and my Dad mentioned that the local gun shop had taken in a Winchester 53 in .44-40, a solid frame. It also had a factory installed Lyman 21 receiver sight. I instructed him to take my 2nd Gen. Colt SAA in .45 do...

Appreciate the feedback fellas. I especially was interested in the comment regarding using Reloader 7 powder. This is one of my favorites for many other calibers as well, and I have a fair supply. When the dies arrive and I have an opportunity to try out some loads, will report on the results.

Have been at the reloading game for over sixty years but have come up against a new situation that has me confused. The original steel Lyman 66LA is for the Marlin lever guns, 336, 1894, and 1895 models. The Winchester lever models use the 66A. There is a difference in the fit of the base to the receiver, and the 66LA will fit the Winchesters, but it does not sit flush against the upper curve of the receiver. It ...

Its definitely a 'project' gun. Probably a '92 action and pieced together 'mongrel'! I've seen quite a few over the years and actually bought one about 40 years ago that was quite well done. Numrich Arms had for sale new Model 65 .218 Bee barrels for many years; leftover NOS acquired from Winchester.

This gun came with a bolt mounted peep sight. Is it still there? A major point of value, it alone is worth $500. Can the buttstock be restored? The 'freckling' you mention is probably just normal 'flaking', common on the 1920s-30s Winchesters. Was the d&t for the scope mounting done professional...

If you have indicated the correct serial number in your post, then your rifle is not a real model 65, it is an early model 1892 that has been rebarreled. All the 'real' model 65s will have a serial number over 1 million. There are quite few of these rebarreled 1892s floating around.

Everybodys kind of been biting at the edges of this discussion. You have to remember that Winchester had introduced the smokeless .33 WCF in 1902, in the '86 model. Remington didn't come out with the .35 Rem. until around 1908. It was a matter of Remington trying to cover the bases by bringing out t...
