Re: Barrel threads on Chaparral 1876 Rifle?... and ASM 1892?

I just realized that Steve of Steve’s Gunz had confirmed to me that the ASM 1892 Barrel threads are the same as the original Winchester, so that question is answered. But, I’m still wondering about the Chaparral 1876 Barrel threads? Are they also the same as the original Winchester?— as I have been ...

Barrel threads on Chaparral 1876 Rifle?... and ASM 1892?

I have an old considerably reworked Chaparral 1876 rifle that I am thinking I will rebarrel with a new .45-75 Barrel. My question is whether the barrel threads on a Chaparral are the same as original Winchester? I have been told they are, as the other screw threads seem to be, but want to confirm. A...

Re: Suggestion for Improving the Forum

OK, Ok, I hear you all. You want it to stay the same. Being the original poster and the one with the original suggestion I was afraid some would see it as a complaint, rather than a suggestion. Yes, I don't have a lot of posts here in the new forum, and I guess I did not identify my post as off topi...

Suggestion for Improving the Forum

I have what I hope will be taken as a constructive suggestion for this forum. I certainly hope no one here takes offense at this. That being said, I notice that as many as four out of five posts on the forum are off-topic or have nothing to do with lever guns. It is often a chore to wade through the...

Re: What is going on with Chaparral Arms?

I still say that I hope Chaparral remains in business. As far as I can tell, their problems arise from bad detail, fit and finishing work. Otherwise, their 1876 rifle duplicates an original Winchester well, unlike the more finely finished Uberti. The Chaparral is made from good, tough 4140 steel. Th...

Re: What is going on with Chaparral Arms?

Well, I for one would not like to see Chaparral leave the market-- and not just because I would like to get some replacement parts. For what I am doing with my 1876, the Chaparral fits the bill. I build rifles, muskets and the like as close as possible to the originals. I decided that I wanted to bu...

What is going on with Chaparral Arms?

Has Chaparral Arms shut down? I have been unable to bring up their website the last couple of days. but can't do so. The other related websites that used to show up in a Google search seem to be gone too. I noticed that the Charter Arms (who was handling the US sales and services) site is still ther...

Re: Refurbishing Chaparral 1876s

By way of an update, I decided to go ahead and try some sharp files on my Chaparral 1876 action and was pleasantly surprised-- the steel was not as hard as I thought. It was hard, but the files did work. I have been draw filing it in places, removing metal to correct the contours and sharpen up and ...

Re: Refurbishing Chaparral 1876s

Mike,
Well. if you do experiment with annealing, then CCH'ing one of them, please keep us informed as to how it turns out. Thanks.

Re: Refurbishing Chaparral 1876s

Mike, Thanks for the input. What are you planning to do with your frames now that you know that they are 4140? I am just trying to figure out what I can do with my frame in view of this information. I would still like to close up that hammer gap, but it sounds like it will need to be annealed if I w...

Re: Taylor's & Co. M1876 .45-60/ PICS

Hi Jon, Mike Hunter is right about the lip that fits into the cut on the bottom of the barrel. In addition to the originals, the Chaparral has this arrangement. You might want to contact Chaparral and see about buying one of their magazine plugs. As I recall from working on your 1876 wood (or maybe ...

Re: Wisdom of annealing 1876 Receiver made of 4140 steel?

Mike, No doubt they are 4140. I heard it from the manufacturer and the importer. Later I noticed it on the Chaparral European website as well. I am curious-- when you say you were going to "true them up", did you mean sharpening the lines and contours to correct the rounded, soft edges fro...

Re: Wisdom of annealing 1876 Receiver made of 4140 steel?

Thanks to all who responded. As I said and based on the responses, I have decided not to anneal it. I also just noticed that Mike Hunter was among those that responded. Having a great deal of respect for his opinion, I am going to go the route that he recommended. In fact, if this turns out well, or...

Re: Wisdom of annealing 1876 Receiver made of 4140 steel?

Thanks for the advice. The question was asked as to how I know it is 4140 steel-- I know this from contacting the importer and the manufacturer in Italy. Both said it is 4140 steel. One alleged gunsmith emailed me and said that he thought that it might actually be stronger if somewhat annealed as 41...

Refurbishing Chaparral 1876s

I have an earlier production Chaparral 1876 rifle that I am working on to get it to the point I am happy with it. Among the things I want to do is sharpen up and correct the lines on the over-buffed receiver. The trouble is that it is made of 4140 steel and is hardened as well-- a file just doesn't ...

Re: Taylor's & Co. M1876 .45-60/ PICS

Hey Jon,
I just stumbled on this post. I have to say that your rifle and the wood looks even better than I remembered it. I am glad to hear that it is receiving some good use and performing well.
