OT? HA! Any of youse who've been to Africa dealt with this?

Post by Old Ironsights »

Camping in Africa is not for the faint of heart.
A friend of mine in Africa says thise elephant was more than likely after oranges. Aparantly they love citrus fruit and can smell it a LONG way off.

When we are camping in the wilderness, we have a strict rule to never bring so much as a crumb of food into any of our tents. Now I know that if I'm ever camping in Africa, not to bring any Elephant goodies into my tent. :D

And I thought ground squirrels were annoying.

Note to self: When in Africa, put the citrus in a food bag and hang it in a tree somewhere slightly out of camp.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Elmer Keith tells a story in 'Hell, I was There' of some young women who were in a truck and foolishly drove right up to the edge of a herd. One big female was smelling the truck and touched the hot radiator cap with the end of her trunk. She immediately stomped the truck to about the thickness of its frame. Unfortunately, the young women were in it. I imagine it must have been quite a job to get their remains out of that very flat truck.

From the size, I am guessing those campers were in Namibia near or in Etosha National Park, which has the biggest elephants in the world. They are humbling creatures.

Honestly gives one a perspective on just how huge those guys are. I can't imagine the kind of juevon's it would take to stand a charge and shoot something that big barreling down on you.

I like the way they had the tents set up on top of the vehicles.

The elephant was only doing what elephants do.

Those rigs with tents on top are popular in southwestern Africa. They keep you up off the ground away from some of the smaller critters and it forces the cobras and mambas to work a little harder to bite you in the face ...

Do like the ranger on my friend's lion breeding reserve, he also has elephant, rhino, cheetah, leopard, girafe and lots of game animals, whack it on the tusk with a pick axe handle. I kid you not and it is not a domestically reared elephant. Know your animals. If I knew how to put a picture on here I would show the guys in question.
