Storms comin. Wish us luck.

Post by Nate Kiowa Jones »

We bugged out for the Gustav storm but we had planned to go to Austin to see my stepson. Just hadn't planned to take the RV, all the dogs and guns. We aren't going anywhere for Ike. As of 4 pm today we will be on the east edge about 175 to 200 mile from the center so I don't think it will be all that bad. At least not like the Rita storm. We took a direct hit from her. Ended up living in my RV in the driveway here for about 5 weeks toting gas for the generator.
This one won't be near that bad, but if we lose power I bought a new generator. Layed in some groceries and if all else fails I still have some MRE's left over from Rita.

I have some guns ready to ship and some DVD/parts orders too, but Fedex is closed and the postman didn't show today. It's going to be at least next week before things can move from here looks like. So, if you are waiting on me hang tight. It will get there eventually.
OK Ike, Bring it on!

Here's praying for the best for you and yours.

I remember Rita because you had my M71 in your care and repair at the time. I hope all goes well this time around. You know, you might want to consider Arizona; it's just a tad drier.

Prayers up that Ike remains "on course", changing strategies in the middle of the night can make for "iffy" operations! :(

I was there in Houston for business for Rita and there again for Gustav. Had to bug out for both of them. Took me 26 hrs to drive from Houston to Dallas when Rita came in. I didn't have family or property to worry about as I live in NC. I feel for ya brother. Good luck, and our prayers are with y'all.

Hey NKJ, We hunkering down in NW Houston, ourselves!

We need the rain pretty bad, but I do not know if we want in the 6-12 inch range. LOL

Looks like it may come right over Galveston and then downtown Houston.

I am glad that is missing your place.

Great Luck to you all!

Steve, We're staying also. Left for Gustav, traffic, late nights, ................I'm gonna stick this one out as long as I can. That is, unless IKE makes a beeline for Winnie Texas.

Well it's 10:20 AM central. The clouds have moved in but no rain, yet. The wind is breezy 20-25 knot gust. (It will get worse of course). I'm not too concerned about the winds. This house is almost 100 years old and it's protected by these old southern liveoak. You know the ones with the really big trunks and bowed over limbs. I really believe those trees are what saved us from the Rita 150 knot winds. The one out front is pushing 250 years old.

I am concerned about the tidal surge. We are about 18 miles from the gulf and we do have a 17 foot Corp of Engineers built levee system between us and the gulf. But, they have made predictions that we could have a 20 foot or more surge. The levee system is inland by about 10 miles, so hopefully is will hold. If the surge breeches the levee we may see some flooding. My next line of defense is where I'm located. According to the old folks here, my area is the highest part of town. I was told this by a survey engineer, too. Also, the history before we had a levee back in the early 1900's folks from the south part of town were evac by rail car to our neighborhood.
I got plenty of supplies and gas for the generators. I've placed my bet, my moneies down, we are staying.

Thanks for the kind words guys

New generator, gas, food, drink. We don't have to ask if your loaded for bear. Good luck. I spent two months working in Gulfport after Katrina. That was some kind of mess. Hunker down and hold on.

Steve,

Prayers sent!

I am in Slidell, Louisiana. Since yesterday, we have been feeling squalls of wind & rain from Ike. I was in Metairie, almost to Kenner, yesterday, and felt them there, too. My trailer feels quite stable, but the porch roof is rumbling away. :!:

Hang in there, Steve!

Steve,

I grew up in Port Arthur and my parents still live (and staying) in Nederland, so I feel for you. Just read in the online PA News and Beaumont Enterprise and they are all warning (worried) about the rising water. Keep your waders close and your generator high off of the gound. Good Luck.

Thanks guys,
I just got so good news. I just talked to a local civil Engineer that knows our Topography. He confirmed what the old folks told me. My area of town was the evac to point back in the days before the levee. It's the highest area here and has never flooded. This old house is on piers and is two story, to boot.

As you can see, those old oak trees have also served me well breaking up the Rita storm high winds. We should be ok.

It seems that your pretty well prepared, and they say it's moving fast. Up here in Hawkins, we really don't need any more rain, but I think that's all we'll get. Rugged individualists, such as yourself, usually come through these things fine. Good luck.

As noted in a similar thread, the hopes and prayers of the Clark Family are with you Sons and Daughters of the Great State of Texas. I have indeed made you folks, your loved ones, pets and possessions, a matter of discussion with the One who cares for all of us. (No, I don't mean either of the Presidential candidates).

Best wishes and ongoing prayers from John deFresno and the deFresnos!
