405 win Ruger no.1

Post by Tennessee Hayre »

I have seen the light :D ''' I have figured out what my next rifle will be. I now have to find one. (Ruger No.1 chambered in 405.) What do you all think about this rifle as a deer/Hog rifle. I already know or think i know what it can do since i have been reading about it for the last 3 hours. Like I tell my wife when i go deer hunting, my words are (All i need is one shot, I don't miss). I have never took 2 shots to bring down a deer, so far I have never missed. (knock on wood) so I am not afraid to hunt with a single shot rifle. I always carry a 44 mag as a back up anyway in a cross draw holster. and since old Teddy always hunted with one in africa it's got to be an excellent rifle. (BIG HOLES) sounds good to me. Tell your als thoughts..

I had one and I REALLY liked it. I eventually sold it because it was to heavy for the type of hunting I do here in Utah for mule deer. To much walking up and down canyons to lug that heavy beauty around. Mine really liked the cast bullet Mountain molds made up for me as well as factory jacketed. I think you will like it if the weight and size are not issues. 8)

I've got one and I love it. My brother used it to down a Maine black bear last week. We took that rifle and my Marlin 45-70 on the trip. I gave him his choice, and he chose to use the 405. I almost didn't get it back from him after the hunt! He's really wanting me to sell it to him, but I don't think I'm ready to turn loose of it. I may use it for this deer season since I've not actually hunted it yet. I have only used Hornady factory ammo so far, but I have some handloads ready to try, just need the time to get out to the range.

You may have some trouble finding one locally, but there are usually some listed on Gunbroker for reasonable prices.

The 405 is a terrific cartridge. I've almost worn a Ruger #1 in 06 out over the years hunting antelope, deer, elk etc. Moral of the story if I hadn't of got my 95 winchester I was going to go with the #1 in 405( if the right deal came along I couldn't say I'ld turn a #1 or 85 winchester down,to this day ). If you can deal with the recoil, I believe you'll like the combination just fine.

I was hopeing to maybe find one at a used gun shop. Here in Clarksville ,Tn we have several gun stores. Thats how I got my 45-70 guide gun. It looked new when I purchased it. What would be a reasonable price for one in good shape...being used? and by the way I don't mind recoil. I put 40 rounds through my 45-70 325 grain and turned around and fired another 40 rounds of 180 grain through my .300 Win Mag. My last 5 shots (.300 win mag) were in a shot group the size of a quarter. I fired alot of heavy weapons during my 20 years in the military and kind of got use to it. But after firing 80 rounds through big bore guns in a 2 hour period at the range I will not say it did not hurt!!! My brain was stressed out and had a sore arm:roll:Loved every min of it!!!

I have a #1 in .308 Win that is easily my most accurate rifle. It beats my 700VS hands down. If I were looking for a bigger caliber #1 I think I'd go with a .45-70. I would imagine the cost of the brass would be about 1/10th what a .405 is and at least in my old Lyman manual there is a separate chapter for the #1 in .45-70. The power levels listed for it slightly overlap the .458 Win Mag. I'm thinking that my next #1 will be a .45-70 as my son is planing a Buff hunt for his college graduation.
