OT wood turning

Post by GunnyMack »

A few weeks ago a buddy sent me a picture of a maple log he was cutting for firewood. I went to his house and picked up a chunk to put on the lathe.
It was too large in diameter to swing on my lathe so I had to make a jig to reduce the diameter with the router giving me a nice circle to follow on the bandsaw.
Once that was done I was able to get it roughly round on the lathe. I walked away from it for a couple days so it would start drying out as my moisture meter showed it at 20% +. After a few days I began to rough out a bowl and walked away again as moisture was down to about 15%. Few more days and more turning. As it was drying it was warping some so a constant truing was needed.
This morning the moisture was down around 7-8% so I finished shaping, sanding and getting a couple coats of poly on it.
It's got some bug holes in it, a small crack due to drying and some interesting color/grain.
I'm going to try and attach a short video...

It took awhile to load, but it came through great for me! Really a nice piece of wood and I like the figure in it. I even find the little squiggly crack line adds interest to it!

The squiggly line is actually not a crack but a worm tunnel. The actual Crack is in the rim/ wall. It got bigger over night.

As our friend Sixgun would say, "...can I have it?" Beautiful work! Really nice wood.

Got home from work and lo and behold the Crack has closed up, hardly see it now.
It still has some moisture in it and I'm sure it will move some more.
I know it's not sitting flat but a flat surface and a sheet of sandpaper will fix that.
