Scope suggestions for .22 bolt gun?

Am now the proud owner of a Savage Rascal single shot. Why did I buy one? Because I wanted it! (grin)

Anyhoo, 3d son is printing a stock extender, and for the other end, I have a perfectly unused Griffin suppressor I'm excited to try.

But nothing in the middle, and no iron sights.

So need a scope, but Heaven help me I hate the world right now. Don't want a red/green dot with magnification, don't want a combat illuminated 1x10 by 3x9 blah, blah.

Just a simple 4x (or maybe a 6x) tube I can slap on. A 4x32 under a hundo. Too much to ask? (sigh)

Love Leupold but can't handle spending 50% again over what I paid for the rifle.

I see on the 'zon TRUGLO and CVLIFE, Simmons Rimfire, and Barska that look interesting. At least I've heard of Simmons.

Anyone got one of these or recommendation?

There are some great smaller airgun scopes on eBay. That’s where I would start.

You might look on ebay for a cheaper, older leupold fixed power or low power variable. Sometimes you can find a deal.

Burris made great compact scopes long ago, Leupold still does, Weaver is gone now but had a couple of nice looking scopes tailored for rimfires not long ago. The trend in scopes now is big tubes, big zoom ranges, tall turrets, and parallax correction; all of which add weight, length, cost and complexity unfortunately.

At your price point, it probably doesn’t matter which brand. You might select something with the parallax already set around 50 yards, as in one marketed as a rimfire or shotgun scope. I would stay away from adjustable objectives in this price range. The less moving parts the more robust it will be.

I've just been through this same struggle.

the scope market for a simple, "regular" scope sucks right now.

Used leupold scopes are NOT a deal on ebay. Used leupold scopes are selling for MORE than new leupold scopes. Because there are a ton of people apparently who want the simpler reticles, who now have to shop on the used market, because manufacturers no longer sell simple scopes. Same deal with the Burris compact scopes. You will not get one for under $100 or even $200. The old used Leupolds are $300 - $500.

As far as weavers or other scopes on ebay - Huge gamble. I've bought a few, and you MIGHT get lucky and get something usable, or you might (more likely) get a turd. Also, you might get lucky and buy from a seller that actually uses at least one square of bubblewrap or like me you might find sellers that toss a scope in a box with some super hard scratchy crumpled up brown paper. I can't say I can recommend ebay. Unless you have a gambling addiction and need a new outlet for it.

As far as cheaper scopes go. I have had good luck with KonusPro scopes. I've had three of them and they've all been good. I've had one on a blackpowder rifle for a dozen years and it's still as good as new. I had a 4x on a .22 henry rifle that I sold. and I just bought a new 1.5-5x konuspro.

Here's a simple 4x KonusPro scope. This is like the one I had on a .22 henry. It's pretty compact, so it won't look weird on your little rifle.

I generally don't care illuminated reticles and things like that unless it's a firearm I'm going to use for the specific task of nighttime barnyard predators.

Over the years I've had quite a few bolt action 22 rifles Probably half of them have had the Bushnell 'Sportview' 4 scope, and the other half various Weavers or < gasp > Tascos (both old and new vintages).

Never had a disappointment with any of them, even though many folks say that Leupold is the lowest-quality they will ever put on a gun. I get that if it is a gun that I'm using for protection, or big-game, but somehow I don't live in fear that my Tasco 4x or 3-9x will somehow go funky on me mid-tin-can-plinking, or mid-squirrel-hunt, and result in me wasting all the planning and travel costs and lottery fees of that once-in-a-lifetime....er, I mean, once-in-a-weekend....hunt I traveled 200 yards to the back pasture to make happen.

Since 22s don't have the issues with recoil to contend with that can truly be an issue with low quality scopes, I just go with what works and I've never had an issue with the Bushnell or Weavers or even the Tascos.

I still have a little 'Sears and Roebuck' 4x that's 3/4" (or maybe less), and the crosshairs broke, so I took it apart (what's "nitrogen"...? ), and replaced them with a piece of aluminum cola-can I carefully punched into a circle with a post 'aperture' that was more pyrimid than post. I somehow fit it into the crosshair mount and it would actually zero. I was probably in 5th grade or younger, because soon after I got a new Ruger 10/22 to replace the Savage bolt action it was on, and the Ruger got a cool Tasco 3-9x. Both of 'em made head-shots on groundhogs outto 75 yards easily though.

This is a good point.

I've had a tasco on my .22 mag for at least 10 years and it's perfectly bright and clear and works great.

Ordered a 4x KonusPro scope per Flint's suggestion, supposed to be here couple days. It's got pretty good reviews and I read the negative comments too.

Interestingly enough, that one doesn't show up on my searches, so that's Amazon being Amazon.

I'll post more images once I got everything screwed together.

I put a couple of inexpensive cvlife scopes on my 22's.
Plenty good enough. Just make sure they have adjustable parallax for short range shooting to longer ranges.

I suspect that many shooters are over-scoped, meaning that they may be looking for more magnification than they can use.

I’ve taken to mounting the same scope on my .22 as I mount on my deer rifle. 1.5-5 Leopold seems to be just right for my rifles.
