Temp variations in insulated containers

Post by mickbr »

Fellas check my math or theory on this. Primers and powders subjected to temp variations particularly heat may degrade faster over years. In warmer regions during summer would storing primers or powder in an old disconnected refrigerator reduce the temp variations due to its insulation?Say if it varies from 70's at night to 105f days, would insulation reduce or slow down time spent at the upper extreme or is the reality is the contents get to ambient temperature pretty fast anyway, aka no difference. Assume no air conditioning in a man cave/den. I was thinking of getting some sorta temp monitor to test this myself

If you have an old fridge and a remote meat thermometer put the thermometer in the fridge and take multiple temp reading daily. You'll get a good idea of how the inside/outside temps play with each other.

How fast powders and primers degrade in temperature swings I don't know but I'm in controlled environment with ac in the summer and steady heat in the winter. I've never had an issue that I'm aware of.

Be sure to put some desiccant in the unplugged fridge. Just to be safe at least

If you are going to do it, put a hasp and a padlock on it. If you aren't going to use it, remove the door.
