.45 Colt Pressure Data
Back in the 1970's John Taffin and I were experimenting with heavy .45 Colt loads using Ruger single actions. I had talked with Elmer Keith about his 300 gr. loads in the old Colt single actions and using the SWAG method (scientific wildass guess) came up with some loads that seemed to work OK and didn't tear the gun apart.
John Taffin got me in touch with John Linebaugh who was doing stuff 'way beyond what we were doing and he helped me a lot! He had built a .45 Colt Pressure Barrel for Hodgdon's and because he built it for them, he had access to it any time it was not being used.
I sent him a bunch of loads to test which turned out to be pretty revealing. Remember. At this time the "accepted" wisdom was the .45 Colt brass was "too weak" to be used in heavy loads.
Here is a copy of the Pressure Data .. thanks to Ray who dug it out of old copies of JD Jones "The Sixgunner" ...

Re: .45 Colt Pressure Data
Wow. Sure seems like a 300-grain bullet at 1,000-plus could do a whole lot of good work -- and a pretty good job on my old wrists!

Re: .45 Colt Pressure Data
I found a box of 20 of those loads last year when I was digging through my reloading gear. I had not shot my Linebaugh Ruger in a long time so I grabbed that box and went to the Range. I brought 17 loaded rounds home ......Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Mon Jul 21, 2025 10:34 am Wow. Re: .45 Colt Pressure Data
I am still searching for the raven .25 acp +p+ article with the spent shotgun primers for bullets. It could be hidden in the articles already posted over there (just added 5 more). Since they are so hard to read in that format I confess to just skimming/scanning so I may have missed it.

Again the caveat that they are not posted in original chronological order.

Very good information Jim.
Re: .45 Colt Pressure Data
Ray ... I remember the .25 fun ... but all that was 'way before 1990. It was back in the mid-80's I would say.Ray wrote: ↑Mon Jul 21, 2025 12:21 pm I am still searching for the raven .25 acp +p+ article with the spent shotgun primers for bullets. John Linebaugh was a good friend and was very kind to me.

I may let my son-in-law shoot them. I don't like getting hammered anymore.

One of my go to loadings is a 300 grain bullet with a healthy dose of H110.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Mon Jul 21, 2025 10:34 am Wow. Sure seems like a 300-grain bullet at 1,000-plus could do a whole lot of good work -- and a pretty good job on my old wrists!![]()
