45 schofield in 45cal lever actions

Post by mickbr »

Anyone tried this and got any sort of acceptable feeding? I saw a bag of schofield brass for sale and was considering giving it a try in my 454 R92. Not a lot of posts about it on the internet, so I am 'guessing' its not as easy as 44 special in a 44 mag.

Haven't tried this, but I did convert my Uberti "Henry" to .45 Cowboy Special, and it feeds reliably.

There's a discussion about this very subject over on the SASS Wire... Reflecting on the 45 Schofield.

Mickbr,
I have a Rossi 92 in 44Mag & 357Mag that will feed my 44Spec & 38Spec, respectively. It is not the fact of it being 'a Rossi' but the fact that it is a '92 designed configuration that is very specific to OAL. The Left cartridge stop and the carrier/lifter must work together with the proper length cartridge or it will not work. I have found that most 92's will only handle bullet OAL lengths that are between 1.55" to 1.56 OAL (arbitrary) on the short end up to a max of 1.603" OAL (again arbitrary to my rifles, findings) on the high end. What I am saying is stay within these length value limits, by adjusting between COL and bullet profile lengths and your '92 designed rifle, should function. These range length limits did not matter in the original Winchesters '92, because most bullets used for each caliber chamber, were factory built or Winchester/Ideal reloader tool created. These were all around the 1.58x to 1.59x range.

That being said the OAL of a 45 Schofield is ONLY 1.430" by WIKI information. Check your OAL of the loads you have and values I have listed and go from there.

I also have a Marlin '94 in 44Mag that would run my handloaded 44Specs but when at a match in the early 90's, my friend wanted to borrow the rifle and use his 44Spec reloads, I thought, OK. My SPEC's worked and so should his. But instead, those bullets jammed with the first cycling. Had to take the rifle apart to get it going. So, it also is not a factor of 'just the rifle model' but of proper length and/or bullet design, combinations.

45 Schofield's, 45 Cowboy cartridges, 44 Russians & 44 Colt length cartridges can be made to function through toggle link '73's, '66's and Henry rifles 'easier' by using modified cartridge carrier/lifter blocks, specific to the desired cartridge length.

Hope this helps you down the road.

I find there are differences between Win 92 designs and to be honest rifles of the same brand too. Even have variances between my own Rossis as to what COAL they like. ...

Of my 6 rossis all liked shorter specials except one. Two of my Rossi 357's in fact ran 38pecials real short, almost wadcutters, COAL in the low 1.3's(from memory, I made a post about here 4-5 years back). Brownings I played with are better rifles but more senstive to COAL IMO

What I'd heard from a few Rossi owners, including the thread linked, is for whatever reason theirs wasnt liking the 45 schofield too much... But anyhow, I'll give them a try.

Surprising, I have not been that lucky to get down that low. I am presently planning to load the Lyman 429478 bullets into 44Mag, 44Spec and 44Russians. The 44Mag is at ~1.590', so they will work. But when I seated one in a 44Spec it measured ~1.507" and I just figured no way to work. Maybe, I will make up few more dummies and test that length. But I know I never had good luck or what I would call 'issue-less feeding' below the values I listed.

The 44Rus will be used just in pistols.

Good luck to you, then.

I'll find the numbers and see if I have a pic or two. My house is gettings its floors sanded or I would pull out the cartridges themselves. I sold my 357's but still have some of the dummies I used for testing the action.
