I knew a rancher whose wife raised a baby javelina. It was bonded to her and would attack anyone who seemed to be threatening her. It slept by the wood stove in the winter and used a cat box for a toilet. Cute when they are young.

Angry little devil!
I always wanted to hunt javelinas, especially with a handgun. Still on my list.

That was funny.
Neighbors' medium-sized Belgian Malinois found out a few months ago not to play with them.

Re: I really miss javelina
Javelina are rough on dogs. My grandpa and his friends hunted coyotes at night with hounds. I loved listening to the music of the dogs voices and trying to identify them.
One coyote would run through a group of javelinas and get them really stirred up and when the hounds got there it was not pretty.
Now the javelinas are gone and folks can’t hunt with hounds anymore (fences mean nothing to coyotes and dogs).
I miss those days.

In Arizona and New Mexico the herds are thriving and increasing their range. I know in Arizona they are now seen near Flagstaff, a place where they were never seen before. The same said for New Mexico. They are frequently seen now in areas where they had not been seen.
Some who study them say that they are simply coming back to ranges they previously had been in, but were pretty well wiped out before they were made a Game animal and managed.
I would think that places having a large hog population, the hogs would keep the Javelina out.

I think that’s what happened here. Hogs have displaced the Javelina.
