Holsters for 7.5-inch Colt SAA Army pattern revolver?

Post by Naphtali »

How are Colt SAA general configuration Army pattern revolvers worn comfortably by hip holsters as strong side and cross draw? Standing or in a saddle any holster design can be adequate. Sitting in a chair, automobile, truck, etc. is a different bag of cats.

I own no "Mexican Loop" holsters of the 1865-1914 black powder cartridge era pattern. I've wondered whether they provide their own solution? Many have a "belt loop" that exceeds three inches. Is is reasonable that the slop designed for large holster belts such as Mills belts, belts used by professional hunters routinely gave these holsters flexibility for comfort in chairs?

I guess 7.5-inch holsters have a current solution?

I'd ask a friend with one if you can wear it with your preferred belt and "see how she feels."
Many here have favorite holster makers. For Old West styles, Stan Dolega at Wolf Ears up in Laramie has never, ever disappointed me over the past few decades, and that goes for his belts as well.

I have several different holsters and a couple of belts. Can't stand anything tight around my waist and have used these for years around the farm, tractors, horse back, UTV, ECT. Very reasonable prices and great service, made here in the states, call them and tell them what you want and they build it, usually takes a a couple of weeks, I can't say enough good about them.... I only have one 7-½" Colt SAA, and the most comfortable way I wear it is in a crossdraw holster. It, however, is like most "western" holsters is made to be worn on a separate gun belt, of between 2-¼ - 3" wide. My usual gunbelt is a 3" "money belt" with cartridge loops from billet to billet (as I recall better'n 50 rounds of 45 Colt). (The only thing better'n plenty of ammo is to have more'n one gun)! The only holster for the SAA I have to be worn on a pants belt is by Simply Rugged, but is for my 4-¾" models. Worn strong side, I can't sit with a 7-½" bbl; heck, even a straight hang holster with a 4" bbl can push against the side bolsters of a bucket seat. I much prefer a crossdraw when seated. The one I use most is still for the 4-¾", but an open toe allows the longer barrel to occupy the same space. The gun sits at about 35-45º from the horizontal. If I'm being active, getting in or out of a vehicle, on or off horseback, I keep the keeper on the hammer. I've seen other folks lose a gun this way... I prefer to have mine only come out when intended. I wear it so that it sits in front of my left hip at a position so the grip is slightly left of my belly button, the barrel hanging out pointed slightly aft of my hip. In this position the gun doesn't interfere with neither reins or rope while riding, nor the steering wheel when driving. (But then I don't crowd the steering wheel, preferring my elbows at greater than 90º when measured from shoulder to wrist. Seatbelts, you ask? Not necessary in a farm truck... and unadvisable on horseback... OSHA be darned.
