Fellas, I'm stuck. Or rather, two of the percussion nipples on a used ROA I bought this year won't budge. Other four came out easy enough, but these last two, directly across from one another, just won't move.
I've tried soaking the cylinder and stuck nipples in Kroil. No luck.
I've tried heat. Also no luck.
I'm not worried about destroying the originals as I intend to replace them with Slix ones anyway. I just want them out.
I recently got a very stuck and very pesky screw to budge using a foaming product called Gibbs. I have used this product to clean and lubricate gun bores before - in fact that is why I bought it. I'm sure you know this, but keep it well away from the wood grips.

This past fall I worked on a muzzle loading rifle that was not cleaned properly years ago. got the nipple out but the flash channel was like it was lined with concrete. I put the breech end in a coffee can of kerosene for two weeks and filled part of the barrel with kroil and 1/2 of carb cleaner. I repeated with kero down the bore and kept dumping it out. at long last I had the barrel upright in a vise with some kero in it and applied heat repeatedly to the breech. and it let go all at once. .
I'd start soaking it in kero or solvent first. Good Luck. Happy New Year!
A solution of 1/2 ATF and 1/2 acetone is supposed to be the bees knees
to loosen things. That said, I just freed off the mufflers on the big
Moto Guzzi with Kroil last night/this morning.(Everybody has their favorite
flavor of penetrating fluid, now don't they?)
I'd also try heat with a heat gun, then drop it in the freezer. Soak it in
solvent. Repeat. I'd try to keep the heat under 400 F.
Copious amounts of imaginative salty language may or may not help; and may or may not
make you feel better!
My new "Go to" penetrating oil is "Free All" . It can be purchased at O' Reillys Auto Parts Stores around here. It will get carbon out of a rifle bore like none other
that I have tried. That being said, I have never tried Kroil so I can't compare.
I haven't had to try this, but here's a thought. It has been suggested to use a 1/4" drive socket of the appropriate size and grind it off so you have a beefier and tighter fitting "wrench".
After soaking with kroil or free all attach a small impact gun, like one of the small Milwaukees, and try that.

You didn't mention whether the wrench/tool you're using is gripping them good enough or not, but maybe you could do all the above (the heat cycles & Kroil/penetrating oil) and then drill out the nipples enough to use an Easy-Out (reverse-threaded tool that you pound into the drill hole). You could also try heating the cylinder with a blowdryer (hot) and then spraying the nipples with Freon (cold), then put a good wrench/tool on them and give them a good whack to see if you can break them free.
Thanks fellas. I hadn't thought of the impact driver or the drill press. Will try both of those. I am not a fan of Ruger's nipples. The area for the nipple wrench or a driver to "grab" may have six sides, but they are awfully short, and the nipple wrench and driver are slipping off.
Next if those don't work will be the freeze/heat rotation. I did let the cylinder soak for weeks in Kroil, so I don't think more time will help.
And if none of that works, looks like I will try the screw extractor method.
