I’ve had this gun for quite awhile and spent time and money trying to get it to shoot paper patch bullets. After giving up on that, I have some 40 caliber bullets I shoot in my 40-65’s and tried those.
Holy $hit, I could shoot gophers with it. I wanted to kill a deer with it this fall and got a nice mule deer buck at about 120 yards…

You're having way too much fun! And I'm feeling a slight twinge of envy. Nice rifle and great shooting!

Very nice ! Do you by chance have an original 1877 ? We have an Axtell 1877 in 45-90 at the shop I’m finding quite Intresting . But I’ve told myself nothing new that I need brass and dies I don’t already have .

Very cool!
Gophers? Isn't that like shooting an individual enemy combatant with a 16" (battleship) gun?

It was shipped to Bozeman in 1877 to J.G. DOW, a banker that fronted for Walter Cooper who was in financial straits with Sharps. Then it ended up in Miles City and rebarreled by A.D. McAusland.

Great thread and well done, Shrapnel. Of all the Sharps cartridges, the .40-90 SBN has fascinated me the most.

Mule deer with a rifle? Heck, I'd've shot him, too!
Congratulations.
