Nice combo. The 1890 is very nice.

Very nice combo!
My grandparents had a an 1890 Winchester, my dad has it now.
It put many a meal on the table, especially during the depression. Dad has it it now; he doesn't shoot it much now that he's 80 and lives in town.
It's not a Winchester but I have a Rossi mod 62 pump .22 16" that is my most shot .22 rifle.
Thanks for posting this, brings back lots of fond memories!

My dad had a Remington Model 12S ".22 Special" that he shot all thru the depression to keep his "Grannie Grimes" household in protein in the Black Hills. I never did figure out exactly what relation she was to us, but she sure kept his family together for the years between when his mother left her three kids and his
dad was serving in the Phillipines. He swore that a .22 Special was a substantially better killer than a regular .22 and worth the extra cost for ammo.

On that basis I revived a Win Model 1890 that had been "stored" in our neighbor's chicken house and used it for years. A great reward for shoveling a little chicken stuff! The WRFs killed just as well as the "Specials"!

For 5 years in junior high and high school that slide action .22 WRF and my Winchester single shot .410 were all the guns I owned. Killed little blacktail "meat bucks" with both of 'em!

As far as I've seen--and I've looked at a lot of guns in the 75 years since I started lookin' at the age of seven--nobody but Remington ever called the WRF "Special"! Even tho it was, compared to the previous .22 RFs!

The .22 WRF (.22 Remington Special)

By Chuck Hawks

.22 WRF

The .22 Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) is all but obsolete. It was designed for the Winchester Model 1890 pump action rifle and was later adapted to Remington and Stevens rifles as well as Colt Revolvers. Winchester .22 WRF loads used a flat point bullet.

Remington manufactured the cartridge, loaded it with a round nose bullet, and called it the .22 Remington Special. The two are actually the same cartridge and are completely interchangeable.
