Loading and unloading shotguns - Tim Walz question...

Post by AJMD429 »

.
Supposedly he was vidoed UNloading his shotgun and was doing it right, according to the 'mainstream' media, but I have a fundamental distrust of the 'news' media.

Anyone here see the controversial video and care to weigh in...? I only have a Mossberg pump and a Saiga semiauto that used box magazines, and am not familiar with the type he was using.

I believe he has a 1300 series Beretta semi auto. It appeared he was fumbling to load/unload over the top of the gun with his left hand.
I dunno about you but things that are 'handed' specific- shotgun, lever etc your off hand is the support and your dominate hand works the controls.
Okay, maybe he is the hunter he claims to be but he sure as heck not a GUN person!

Because of people that are not GUN people, like Chaney shooting his quail hunting buddy is the reason why our club changed the rules to break open only guns, no pump or semi's for bird hunting. This has led to much better muzzle control , handling as the guys now have to be cognizant of walking with open loaded guns.

Everywhere I go for quail or Partidge or pheasants are break action only . The pheasant and partridge are at tower shoots rules at all the places are pretty standard do not load until on the peg unload before moving . The preserve I go for quail a couple times a year is gun cracked open until dogs are on point and walking in , no shots at kicked up unpointed birds .

With an O/U or SxS at skeet trap sporting ZZ bird or pigeon ring the gun never leaves my right hand and I’m right handed . My shell punch is always on my left side and I remove empties and reload with my left hand . Got in that habit shooting skeet trap forty years ago . When I was in Argentina earlier this year I shot a Benelli Montefeltro two of the days and with that gun I held it with the left while the right reloaded , never needed to unload there just try and keep it filled lols !

When I was shooting Cowboy Action I saw a lot of "gun people" who could not unload or reload a single action sixgun without fumbling around and poking and prodding and prying. A lot of people who shoot never get familiar enough with their firearm(s) to be smooth, professional and efficient.

I probably looked like that awhile back when trying to load and fire an AR ......

On the bunker once the gun is opened after your shot most hold with left, load bottom barrel with right then the gun is grabbed at the wrist and left hand takes a shell from the left vest pocket for the top barrel. Then gun is always in your control. Of course it helps that we stand on a square meter of 1/2" thick rubber mats.

In just about everything I shot an O/U or SxS I never turn the gun loose with my right hand on the wrist . Heck even at a tower shot . However this changes slightly if I use a hammer gun my right hand pushes the lever opens the gun left hand takes the empties out and put live ones in the chambers then right hand pulls the hammers back and the gun stays cracked open until I’m ready to shoot ! And I’m in control ! And come to think of it my constant tight hold on the gun with my right hand might have something to do with the semi constant discomfort in my right wrist elbow and shoulder lols !
