Started On The Woodpile This Morning

Post by JimT »

It was a nice 54 degrees and felt like a good time to work on the woodpile. I have a bunch of Oak and Pecan logs to split. Most of the Oak and about half of the Pecan are cut to lengths. Gonna be working it from time to time til I get it done for this winter.

It's a never ending chore Jim. I used to burn 8- 10 cord per year between 2 stoves. Then I replaced the basement stove with a pellet stove, cut the firewood by half. Then replaced the upstairs stove with another pellet stove. Now all the labor is once a year getting the pellets into the basement.
Just not the same as watching a real fire but it's constant steady heat.

We have propane also, but in emergency situations like to reserve it as much as possible. Besides, it is just nice to back up to a fire!

.
We're 100% wood-furnace heat (other than a heating-blanket on the bed), and we USED to have a full-shed by August, with half the wood being from the prior year - nice and dry.

Now these past few years, we get to Halloween and I realize we have just about a week's worth, and we typically heat from Halloween to Easter...

Yes sir Jim, nothing like a wood fire to chase the chill from your bones. That's the biggest thing I miss with the pellet stove.

Yes Doc, always seems like you are behind when it comes to firewood. I always tried to cut for the following year. I tried awfully hard to not cut green trees. Fortunately living on a wood lot I always had a few standing dead to cut.

We only have a cord of wood left from last year . A week ago I dropped two small maple trees and got them cut & split up and under cover . Left My part time Job this morning and got pelted by hail and rain. was in the low 40's. I'm Lucky to have hard Coal from Pennsylvania available to Us as we have a coal furnace and a Harmon Stove upstairs that burns wood or coal. We bought the coal furnace 10 years ago after propane went to $7.00 . I still split wood by hand, but if I'm going to stay here I'll soon be getting a log splitter. No country for old Men. Stay Warm. :D .

You got a nice pile going there. We heat with wood stove as well as an electric heater just to knock the chill off. Nothing cuts the cold out of your bones like a wood stove. Nothing smells as good as cherry wood smoke.
