Funky Shotshell

Post by Keith D »

So, I recently have been attacked repeatedly by ducks and pheasant. The stories are too terrible to tell as I'm sure it would cause many a man to experience PTSD. Looking around I found these older Winchester shells. From what I researched they will ONLY work on duck and pheasant, but will work very well in that capacity...lucky me! However, 1 of them looks to be a bit out of shape. The 6 for notating 6 Shot was not printed well and it's a bit fatter in places than it should be. I only have these 7 shells and 1 is iffy. If there are more than 6 evil ducks and pheasant to dispatch, then I fear I may be doomed.

The bulge looks like the wad got all catywampus during loading.
Does a magnet stick to the payload? If not don't take them duck hunting as your friendly neighborhood game warden might give you a ticket.

If you only have 6 ducks to take care of and each shell is good for 6 ducks and pheasants, you should be fine.

A most excellent point! I'm good for dispatching at least 36 ducks & pheasants (combined) that are intent on ensuring my demise. Ain't easy living NWI for sure.

Those have the heat staked crimp sealer so you know they are factory at least. The bulged one may not chamber early in a repeating gun but you could probably seat fine in a break open gun.
You wonder if it started off bulged or if it’s deformed over time. I’ve seen some old shotshells where the lead shot oxidized and cause them to swell up and split the plastic hulls. The split ones I broke down.
I do appreciate those old heat stake crimps as an indicator of being factory ammo.

That’s definitely lead shot from an earlier time. Do not take them waterfowling. I used these as a teen and they killed squirrels WAY OUT there (I bypassed the weaker Rabbit and Squirrel version). Should do fine on turkey too with the right choke.
