Skinner sights

Post by 4t5 »

I want to get one for my Henry single shot 357 , I know I’m gonna need a taller front sight . I’ve never used brass for a front sight , is that a good option over a blue steel front sight ? Daylight and twilight ?

Andy's in Africa right now so probably won't be checking in here, and tomorrow's a holiday. I'd suggest you give them a phone call on Tuesday as Andy's team does a great job in helping folks make the right choice.

I'd go with blued or black post. It works better all the time, where brass isn't great in bright light.

I've liked the brass beads like some Marlins come with.

I also actually like the non-orange fiber fronts (orange too glary in bright light), and a globe/aperture front with crosshairs is a fine option allowing low-light shots ('just put the target in the front hole and look at it through the back hole') but allows great precision with a rear aperture in good light by using the front crosshairs. I have this setup on a couple of leverguns and a couple of ARs.

While I like fiber optic beads, I have moved away from most colors. Red on a red target, super bad. Orange, maybe. Black iron sights on black target-very bad. You get the idea. Best color is green fiber optic near as I can tell. You need all the contrast in colors you can get. Fiber optics in dim light, preferably green, really do help as they capture a lot of light. But maybe the biggest problem with fiber optic beads, is the width of the bead itself. It is very hard to find a small fiber optic bead anymore, and the typical larger ones are great for short range, but completely suck at longer ranges as the width of the bead obscures the target and kills accuracy. I still have a smaller fiber optic front sight on my BLR and it works great. I think, at least at one time, Williams discontinued this smaller front sight. So I am glad to have it to this day. The larger fiber optic sights are great for short range and quick target acquisition, but for long range precision shooting they do not work. A large brass or white bead suffers from the same problem, IMHO. You will discover the same problem with red dot sights, and the size of the dot. The 2 MOA dots are a decent compromise. For longer ranges, I would seek out a 1 MOA dot that is very bright. These really small red dot sights are typically much more expensive. The larger dots are for close range only and the same for fiber optic ones if you ask me.

Just my opinion, your mileage may very.

I've used an all brass blade sight before on a muzzleloader. It was smooth faced, and didn't present a problem. Just like a brass bead, you want the back of the sight blade to be square and not rounded. All black sights work the best for me under all lighting conditions except for dim light, and in dim light, if I can't see the sights, I can't really tell where I'm aiming either.

I really like a flat gold bead on just about any firearm these days.

That looks like some of Fermin Garza's fine work.

I recently had him make a couple of Patridge blades for a Freedom Arms 97. Did not opt for the gold bead as I wanted a narrower .100" blade.
