Colonel Sam Colt was born on this day in 1814. He would go on to refine the idea of a revolver into what we know today, creating a firearms company that still bears his name (though not owned by the family).
A well-known phrase concerning Sam Colt is this: "God did not make all men equal; Colonel Colt did". Setting aside the sacrilegious nature of the phrase, this refers to the ability of a revolver (and now handgun in general)f to negate the advantages of strength, youth and skill of a larger, younger aggressor. The phrase is actually based on a poem from the day:
"Be not afraid of any man, no matter what your size. For when danger threatens, call on me, and I will equalize."
One of the many nicknames of Colt's famous "Single Action Army" revolver, introduced in 1873, was "the equalizer".
