I see that CONSTANTLY among physicians; they had enough perseverance and tuition loans or scholarships to make it through a dozen years post-high-school before getting a real job, so assume they know all there is about
everything.
The reality is they know a lot about a few things.
Often they have
less common-knowledge than average, and less common-sense than average.
Nothing to be ashamed about; they are often experts in their field, but they appear incredibly
stupid (and arrogant) if they step outside their area.
It happens to Family Physicians all the time that specialists in specific areas dismiss our input because they have even more training in an even narrower area; having a cardiovascular surgeon countermand my hormone replacement orders for a menopausal woman because he thinks the estradiol/estriol cream “causes blood clots” is a classic example…not at all true, but then the internist comes along who doesn’t know one way or the other and they will ‘side’ with the one whose car costs more than my house…
Sagan was smart within his bubble, but NOT smart enough to know there was a complex world outside his bubble he had no knowledge of.
