OT - Scoped bolt/single rifle suggestions
I think I need to get a long range (300yd) rifle. I am on another
forum where I may be helping other neophites get into hunting.
Prefer a lever but not in the budget (approx $5-600 max)
I was thinking about a Savage 110 in 30-06 or something
that would allow alternate calibers. A single shot would be
OK as well. Only thing I see in singles would be the handi-rifle.
On doing a web search I see pros and cons for the handi.
Give me your ideas and preferences.
Thanks,
Jay

How about a Browning BLR in 30-06, .308, or .243. You should be able to locate a used one in your price range. Nothing wrong with the 110, though. The BLR's are superbly balanced and they are a lever. Tom
Re: OT - Scoped bolt/single rifle suggestions
I shoot varmints. Cooper makes the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. That includes some Jarretts.
Wea SVM's. Rem 700V's. The only cheap accurate rifle I own is an older Win M70 243 Varmint from '68.
Coopers are mostly single shots. They are very reasonable in price. Mostly wood stocks. If you have lots
of money and want something exotic try a Blaser95. They break open like a shotgun plus you can get
extra barrels in different calibers. real exotic stuff too. WAnt a 9x57? Accuracy has never been cheap.

If you want spend up to $4-500 you shouldn't hav a hard time finding a good used Ruger M77. I hear lots of good things and my buddy has one in .243; very nice rifle.

Re: OT - Scoped bolt/single rifle suggestions
The Savages are very good and the barrels can be swapped with a minimum of tooling/effort (to my understanding) to something within the same family of cartidges as long as the case head is the same. You can also swap bolt heads but the case length needs to be in the same group as the action was originally chambered.
The Handi-Rifles are great, I have no problem with mine.
The Contender carbines/rifles (I don't recall if they're considered carbines or rifles...
) are another good option as well.

Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

Winchester 670 30-06 . They can be had for less than $300 if you have patience.

Winchester 70, remington 700, ruger 77, and savage 110. All are good rifles, you will be happy with any of them I like the 700 the best but thats just me.
Break on through to the other side!!!

You can get a good used M700 for the price range you are looking at. Probably in one of those Magnums too.

I'll second that. Any of the old push-feed M70's will usually be great shooters, and not too hard on the wallet either.Tycer wrote:Winchester 670 30-06 . They can be had for less than $300 if you have patience.

You may want to keep an eye on your local Big 5 Sporting goods store ads as they often have the Savage w/scope for under your budget.Just remember tax and all the added Calif stuff for your total
.They also do Lay-away.Scope won't be great but just to get you started.

Re: OT - Scoped bolt/single rifle suggestions
Used Remingtons are in that price range and the most consistently accurate in my experience. Savages are consistently accurate also. They are almost always available in here in Lancaster. Pick your caliber, .243 to 30-06 will easily do it. I have most of them if you would like to come to A Place to Shoot to try anything.
Take that back - I don't have any Savages. Well except the 99s.
