List of Must-read books for young’uns

Post by AJMD429 »

.
I want my grandkids to ‘get it’, and understand the world and history and why the US is unique and how capitalism works and why ‘compromise’ is sometime evil, and so many other things.

So I’m trying to put together a list of books covering all things important.

Here’s one I bought off s forum member that’s going on the list, because it describes the WW2 so well from a personal standpoint, illustrates how ordinary people can be heroes, how ‘authorities’ can betray, and how tough women can be when needed.

So many good books though - and young people don't seem to read BOOKS like they used to.

I could list a hundred. But even one 'deep' book a year is a lot to ask realistically, and maybe age 12-18 the only window of opportunity.

I guess if I make a big list and describe WHY I think each is important to read, they can pick and choose.

Maybe we could start a list of books (and what they contain to put them on the list).

For not only the young kids in our lives, but ourselves as well.

(…reluctantly I may have to do the same with a ‘video’ list; perhaps more likely to penetrate the minds of the younger generation… :| )

not very long ago, in terms of our life spans, children learned to read the scriptures, like at 4 or 5 years old, taught by their parents, and then teaching their younger siblings. children went to school in America learning from McGuffey's Readers, and before they were out of high school they were teaching in one-room class rooms. I have two grandmothers who taught one-room schools. One graduated magna cum laude from Stanford, the other I'm not sure of, but she was a plains farm girl.

If anyone had tried to hijack their students with the tripe children are force fed now, those "activists" would have got religion in a hot hurry.

Remember the scene in Tombstone where two antagonists were speaking in Latin? Yeah? I read that an 8th grade student raised on scripture and McGuffey had a better than high-school education from the Department of Missed Education.

THIS is the foundation of the greatness of America....... anyone see it appearing around the corner?

Near as I can tell schools no longer require kids to read books. And I doubt any could write a book report. Most kids want rapid entertainment that requires no thought or contemplation.

Frankly it won’t be long before the written word is forgotten.

My grandsons read all the time ... 7 and 9 years of age. Home-schooled in conjunction with 2 days a week at an academy designed to help home-schoolers, they read the Scriptures, do book reports and a lot of the "old timey" stuff that actually works. My 9 year old grandson just finished reading Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer ... he reads all the time.

Great news Jim, our Texas grand kids are being raised the same way, an academy combined with home school. We home schooled our three, and those three kids are benefiting . . . .
