Re: Just 30 government (30-06)
Another interesting fact is the .270 Win is a necked down .30-03.

Historic note -- ".30 Government" most often refers to the .30-40 Krag.

Thanks, I stand corrected. Changed the subject line to reflect this.

Harry.....very informative to the ones who want to learn......your post got me thinking....I've got a mess of the 30-03 ammo but can't find it......but I have maybe a thousand or two of Ww2 ammo of most types and I remember many years ago,.."when I get old Im gonna shoot this stuff up out of the BAR or the Garand.....or the 03A3 Smith.....
Other than the cast it's most all Ww2. I shot up at least a thou over the years and It all goes bang......even some Ww1 stuff went off fine.

At the end of the driveway I put in two posts, one on either side.....the side where the gate was was an 8"x8" and HAD to be in this one spot.......and wouldn't ya know it a huge rock was about a foot down and I needed at least 18" of depth so I went in the house and got out the Smith Carina 03A3 with a half dozen rounds of WW2 armor piercing black tip.........I just pointed the rifle in the hole, turned my head and shot.....believe it was 4 rounds and the 16" rock was pulverized.
The wife came out and said, "what the hell are you doing out there?" I told her, "putting the post exactly where you said to put it."

Re: Just 30 government (30-06)
All of the 1895 Winchester rifles I have personally seen had "30 Government 03", "30 Government 06" and the .30-40s were marked ".30 U.S." or ".30 Army"

I'll have to look at Pirkle's book when I get home today
"Make yourself an honest man, and then you may be sure that there is one less scoundrel in the world." - Thomas Carlyle
Re: 30 Ball Model of 1901
Vance,
To my understanding you are correct. 30 Army was 30-40 Krag- because the Navy used a different cartridge at the time. (6mm Lee Navy).
30-06 was called 30 Gov’t because the whole government adopted that one rifle/ cartridge. Or at least some marketing guys decided to call it that on the Winchesters.

The 30 caliber rounds can be confusing. Thanks for the post.
