Quick draw with 7 1/2" Ruger .45 Colt .. 260 gr. cast bullet 8.5 gr. Unique -- I threw the wagon wheel with my gun hand, jerked the gun and shot the wheel. Paco snapped the photo just after I hit the wheel.-

His name was Goliath. Almost as big as a draft horse, but he was very careful with his feet and one of the best mountain horses I have ever ridden. If a man was smart and let him have his head, he could take you anywhere safely.

I had an Appy that was like that. His name was Hud. He would put his head down and look where he was putting his feet when we rode in bad country. I rode him in country I was nervous about walking in. And he loved to hunt! He knew what we were doing and often spotted game for me. If his ears went up and he was looking someplace, there was something there, even if I couldn't see it.

My late uncle Paul Doe, a lumberman and rancher, loved a Morgan for packing into the high mountains of Eastern Oregon and along the Idaho border.
My only mountain trail ride was on one of his mules, with some bailing twine "stirrups" tied to a Decker pack rig. Not too comfortable, but that outfit worked.
