Marlin 45

Post by RonEgg »

Is there a difference in barrels on the 1894 .45 and the 1894 CB .45? As I understand it the former has the micro groove and the CB has ??????? Do you folks that have one, have any opinion as to the shootability and accuracy of either. I am going to buy a 1894 not CB or rebarrel a .44 to .45 and want all your opinions.

I wasn't aware that Marlin makes an 1894 in 45 Colt - non cowboy that is. The only two that I know of are the 94 (44 Mag/Special) and CS (.357 Mag/38 Special).

The microgroove barrels are more finicky with cast bullets. They will shoot them just fine but the bullets need to be sized over bore or they tend to make paterns rather than groups.

If you're planning on using jacketed bullets then no practical difference between the micro and ballard type rifling IMHO.

My Marlin 94 CB 45 Colt is a real shooter and I really like it. I'd just go that route if I were you.

RonEgg,

The 1894S was made in the .45 Colt caliber around the early 90s. I had one. I never got a chance to see what kind of accuracy it was capable of because the chamber was so huge the firing pin would drive the entire cartridge inside the chamber, rim and all.
I took it back for my trade and money back. Others have reported they work great.

My 1894 Cowboy Limited shoots very nice up close, but I haven't had the chance to really test it at longer ranges. The one time I got to the outdoor range the wind was so bad it was blowing my buddies guns off the tables.

The 1894S had a 20" round carbine barrel like most all the standard 1894s. It did have the Micro Grove barrel.

The 1894 Cowboys, both versions have the octagon barrels with the Ballard rifling. I'm not convinced the Ballard rifling is any better than the micro grove. It's very shallow. Six groves right hand twist, 1 turn in 18" I think.

I wouldn't hesitate to try another 1894S if I found one. One bad one does not ruin the entire model run.
