New Shilen barrel

Post by GunnyMack »

IS A KEEPER!
For years I've been debating a new barrel for my favorite 22. Ruger 77/22. Seemed like every time the barrel bug would bite there wasn't a barrel to be found. I was bit again a couple weeks ago and this time Midway had the cure in stock!
I ordered the factory profile stainless steel. It needed very minor polishing of the shank to fit the receiver. I decided to give it a free float. Yesterday I was able to put a half box of CCI std velocity through it, following Shilen break in of shoot 1, clean repeat for 5 shots then shoot 5, clean. All the while sighting it in. Here is a group , I was holding on a previous bullet hole , a 5 shot group, the low right I called when I shot.

Here is the stock I made for my 77/22

.
I have the 'all-weather' version and I put a NEGS rear peep (fits the Ruger Ring Base) on it. Fine gold bead up front. Golf-ball accurate at 75 yards.

I put a Green Mountain bull barrel on my other 77/22 and cut the groups in half. 77/22's have the lever in the wrong place, but are great guns. 96/22's are fun but nowhere near as accurate (though I did turn a 96/22WMR into a 96/17HMR using a light weight Green Mountain barrel, and it is a tack driver; possibly more reflective of the 17HMR's inherent accuracy.

My next door neighbors in Ennis are good at making barrels. Shilen has earned their reputation.

Thanks Oldncrusty, no it's walnut.

Piller do you get a neighbors discount? I've had very good results with Shilen barrels. I think this is my 3rd or 4th that I have put on different guns I've built.

Wish I could.
Once a year, they have an open house. Factory seconds are sold then. Even those go fast. Great people there.
