OT, Las Vegas Trip

Post by nemhed »

I'll be heading to Vegas with the wife later this week, will be there for 4 days, 3 nights. Any suggestions on must see or do attractions,...beside gambling. We're planning on seeing Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon.

The Silverton Casino/Hotel is attached to a huge Bass Pro Shop. You can walk right into the casino from the store. They have a really nice fine gun collection, indoor archery range, as well as a large selection of firearms.

Go to the Gun Store on south Tropicana Ave. You can shoot just about anything full auto. I burned up $60 in a Thompson, but had more fun than any slot machine. Two gals were next to me shooting Uzis and you needed a bushel basket for their empties.

nemhed, it's going to be hot! if your up to the heat, Red Rock is nice, but my favorite is Valley of Fire, it is located at the other end of Lake Mead from Hoover Dam. You can get there from Hoover Dam from the North Shore Road, or from Vegas taking I15 North.

I would invite you to go shooting out in the desert, but it gets to hot for me this time of year.
There is also Mt. Charleston which is a much cooler place to visit this time of year, some nice hiking trails and two lodges up there.

Give me a yell if you want to meet up at BassPro's I live just down the street from there.

I second the Valley of Fire. This time of year it'll live up to it's name though. For a guy from a different climate it might be unpleasant. Of course, no humidity to speak of but still 100-110 degrees is hot.

nemhed,
If you want a little romance, Take her to the Eiffel tower and watch the water show at the Bellagio. Stay away from the area between the strip and downtown. If you don't have a vehicle, take the Duece. It's a two story bus. Heck, take the deuce anyway. You can buy an all day pass, pretty cheap. Check out the light show in downtown at night. Also check out the spray paint artists. I usually end up watching them for couple of hours. Most of the hotels on the strip have valet parking, but usually their parking lots are just a short walk to the casino and they are free. STAY AWAY FROM THE PORN CARD GUYS!!! If you take one, they are on you like rabid dogs.

Have fun and enjoy,
Tom

We call them the "clickers" - because that is the sound they make trying to get your attention. I am always amazed at Las Vegas - by the early evening you could practically wallpaper the strip with all those cards, and then in the morning they are almost all gone. They clean up the place like Disney does each evening - must be a small army of people doing it!

I like the architecture of the major hotels. The water show at the Bellagio is fun. Take the bus out to the "old strip" just to see it - it is worth the short drive. Watch out for cabbies though - they are nuts! I got nailed about 5 years ago walking in a cross walk parallel to the Strip (between the "Monte Carlo" and "New York, New York"). Cab driver decided he wanted to beat the traffic, and just didn't see me. I heard him hit the accelerator, and saw the movement out of the corner of my eye, so left for the curb. Good thing too, as he was driving a Durango, and me jumping got me high enough that when he hit me I went up onto the hood versus under the vehicle. Apparently my sudden appearance on his hood and against his windshield was someone of a surprise, because he promptly slammed on the brakes and threw me out a dozen feet into Las Vegas Boulevard. Got darn lucky I did not get hit by a second and/or third car moving much faster!

When I talked to the police later than stated that pedistrians getting hit by cab drivers is very common in Las Vegas. So beware when you are walking!!!

You might take a day off and drive up to pinoche nev. Its a super old mineing town in the middle of nowhere up 93. They have 3 or 4 tiny bar-casinos also. I have seen wild horses etc near by, the old town is quant.
I live 95 miles to the east of it in utah, and like going to the area.

Visit the Bass Pro shop, just south of Vegas on the 15. It's a great place to spend a few hours.
