check your lever screws

Post by coyote nose »

Did some 4th of July shooting today....25 rounds of 45-75 thru the Chaparral. Came in and had a few minutes to kill after cleanup. Decided to check the screws on the gun and found the hammer screw to be quite loose. Checked some other lever guns and found a couple of loose screws there also. Always checking SAA screws but never really made it a routine to check levergun screws, I will now. Just a heads up to those out there in levergunland. Have a good 4th and remember to thank those responsible for our liberty.

I've heard all my life that I have a screw loose and thought this is what they meant. Was I wrong?

Yes, I check my screws...
Sincerely,

Hobie

A routine I have is always check for missing screws just before I leave the range...Much easier to find them around where I've been shooting if one has worked itself loose...

Lefty's screwdriver is a good piece of equipment, and no lever gunner should be without one - especially if you are a cowboy shooter who uses a Marlin. Good friend of mine lost 8 shots on a stage at EOT because of a loose screw on her Marlin! Less than 100% reliable is unacceptable in any firearm. Check your screws!

I have only one lever gun that has a screw loose. My 94 30-30 Trapper. It seems the hammer screw is always just not tight. It never comes completely loose and it's never come out. So I don't use my blue fix on it.
I have only one specialty screwdriver that I've purchased, that's one from Peacemaker Specialists. It works for the grip frame screws on my Rugers.
For my lever guns I use my Chapman bit driver set, or I do an IFM on an existing screwdriver. Got several of those.

As for checking the screws I do once in a while.

So far, so good.

Of course I don't abuse my lever guns like the cowboy shooters do.

Oh Hobie, I've been told the same thing most of my life too. Never did figure out why.
