Biggest buck yet, 2021
.
Without a nurse practitioner to share call with, I couldn't go more than an hour without getting paged this past week. Running hot water for a bath or pouring milk on a bowl of cereal became a gamble. But I decided to at least get out a little bit on Wednesday to pretend I was deer hunting. It was the only day that would work taking into account my wife's work schedule and my work schedule and the time it would take to butcher a deer.
Unlike my son, who makes a biologic science out of managing the herd, I generally just figure the role I play is to cull out the stupidest deer there are, namely those that are incautious enough to walk in front of me when I'm hunting.
Usually it is a doe, but this year a young buck was unlucky enough to be the one. 120 lbs field dressed and 50 lbs meat.
I had planned to hunt with my 35 Remington Marlin 336, but didn't get a chance to make sure it was sighted in. So I decided I would use a different firearm.
Just so I could be a bit defiant and politically incorrect, I decided I would hunt with the Indiana-deer-legal firearm that would appear the most obnoxious to a liberal, so I chose this one in 300 Blackout.
Given our current political situation, I'm sure before long I will have to register it as an SBR or have it melted down for a lawn ornament.
Anyway, one shot with a 150 grain jacketed HP bullet made an entrance hole through the left scapula, angled down and took out the top portion of the heart, and exited the lower right lung, for a humane kill where the deer sprinted about 10 yards and collapsed as he slid under a small log. I used the 'backup' 45° iron sights, which actually work very ergonomically for this kind of setup. There is also a red laser and green-dot optic that would work as a close-quarters ghost ring if the battery died, for cases where there is a social problem that needs addressed.
I managed to drag the deer out and be back at the house field dressing and hanging it within about an hour and a half, and only had one page during that interval. Someday it would be nice to have another person to share call with though...!

Good job! That .300 Blackout is a pretty good deer round.
Re: Biggest buck yet, 2021
Good job Doc. That will make some fine venison.

Congratulations Doc!
Nothing like fresh deer meat! The .300BO is a good cartridge. The best part is, if they stop loading it next week, it don't matter. You can run it with whatever you have laying in the bottom of the drawers in your loading bench. It's quite versatile.
I managed this 9 pointer a couple weeks ago. DRT with the good ole 30-30.

Doc, so glad you got a brief respite from the great responsibility of your job and earned some venison in the process. The .300 Blackout certainly has its place in the hunting fields.

Congrats Doc, we didn't even see a buck in the high desert this year.
Re: Biggest buck yet, 2021
I dunno. I’d rather bang a doe. Bucks make my fingers stink.
Kind regards,

Re: Biggest buck yet, 2021
.
Had the ribs for dinner tonight, and boy were they tasty. Partly due to my wife knowing how to make anything taste good.
I haven't really scoped out the ballistics, but I'm guessing the 300 Blackout isn't a whole lot different than the original vintage loads for 30-30. It would be a fine cartridge for a levergun as well, similar to a hot loaded 32-20 or 30 Carbine. There wasn't any particular need for a rapid follow-up shots like one might need in a 'social situation', but likewise there is no particular reason NOT to have a magazine fed firearm.
The firearm was merely the tool used to accomplish the job, and it did so quite effectively, with an appropriate level of ballistics for the task at hand. Nothing nostalgic, but certainly functional.

Nice buck you got there Doc, but it's interesting that your state allows FMJ bullets for hunting.

Re: Biggest buck yet, 2021
It was actually a red gummy-tip so I guess it is a hollow-point. I believe it was a 'Gorilla' brand factory load I got a few years ago. Jacketed though.

Nice to see the end result of the .300 Blackout. I had one and just couldn't warm up to it. Sold it and bought a .450 Bushmaster. That's been a lot of fun and hope to take it on a boar hunt in the next few months.
Nice shootin' Doc!

Re: Biggest buck yet, 2021
I do have a 50 Beowulf upper I've thought about using, but kind of like the 500 S&W, it seems overkill for deer. At least the 500 S&W is easy to 'download' and still function in a levergun; not sure how to download the Beowulf and still function in a semiauto. I'll probably hope to (someday...) go on a boar hunt with the Beowulf - that would seem to be its niche (or bad-guys-breaching-the-perimeter.... )
Hopefully next year I'll be able to use my 35 Remington levergun for whitetail. I just have to work up a decent reload (assuming components are not still so scarce).
