Article on the 500 S&W

I didn't know that the original thought (at least of the author) was to build a DA in 500 Linebaugh, using a less massive frame. THAT would have appealed to me more in terms of a handgun than the 500 S&W. If I can't do a relatively fast followup shot, I'd just as soon have a Thompson Center Encore pistol, and I just can't see myself shooting a full-house 500 S&W out of a handgun very rapidly. 500 Linebaugh-level loads would be more my level.

Out of a levergun, though, the full-house loads of 500 S&W are pussycats from a recoil standpoint, and yet have a big punch at the target end.

makes me like the '12.5 Beo' even more. it won't have the velocity of the 500, but it doesn't have the pressure either, and an ar pistol is handier for me now that i'm losing my grip and need a handle at both ends.

the underwood 350Gr xtp velocity is 1775 from i suppose a rifle barrel. knock off a couple hundred fps and it's still a formidable load. shoots easy from pistol without a brace, just nock the buffer tube like an arrow. :)

Doc, I bet you could fire a ported S&W 500 faster than you think. My 454 Raging Bull is ported and actually not the bad to shoot with 300 bullets. Heavier bullets even moving slower kick much harder though. I had a chance to shoot a Premier FA in 500 Wyoming Express, both with a lighter load, and max load 440 grain bullets. I have never felt a jolt like that go up my fore-arm and feel it in my elbow but what really shocked me was my follow up shots I was able to control the muzzle flip of that monster better than almost any hand gun I have ever shot. FA really knows how to design a grip frame that just plain WORKS!!! You could get one of them in 500 L too!!!
