Henry 45/70 Side Gate Done My Way

Post by jstanfield103 »

Ok Guy's/Gal's

I did get my new Henry H010 side gate in. Before I shoot my guns there is always a few things that I do to them. First and most important thing is to cut the LOP down to 12.5" which is the first thing I also did on this new Henry. It is hard to match the finish up when you do this and if it did not have checkering I would just redo the whole stock. But did not want to mess the checkering up. It needs a little more sanding to get the sanding marks out but right now I am satisfied with it. I am only 5'5" tall so I have to have that shorter LOP or it feels like I am holding an 8' 2x4 on my shoulder.

Next I always like the way a saddle ring look's on a rifle, so I put them on all my lever's. Nothing but bling but I like them, and the beads are because of my wife being .25 American Indian. I enjoy Honoring her heritage.

I have found that out of all the sights I have tried and own from current to past, that I really like the Marbles Bullseye sight. They are really well made strong sights and easily get a great sight picture. So I also put one on this rifle, sighted in and works great as I already knew it would.

Finally I always wrap my Levers on all my rifles, then I keep them oiled up once in a great while to prevent rust. I am not sure what kind of twine/String this is but I have wrapped a couple levers with it and looks and works well.

Ok enough said so here are a few pictures of her, like I said stock could use a little more work.

Now THAT is an awesome levergun. 8)

It's in the "if only one gun" category, really.

And I agree with the Marbles 'Bullseye' sight as being one of the best there is.

Next time you cut a stock for LOP first wrap the stock in 2 layers of masking tape, after you cut it screw the pad to the stock and then grind/sand it to shape and the finish shouldn't be harmed in anyway. Sand through the top layer of tape then sand by hand into the second layer. She looks good though!

Looks good. I'm a big fan of saddle rings too. I've installed them on many project rifles.

Levergunners were doing “Tactical Single-Point Slings” LONG before the AR-crowd was even born...

A saddle ring on a ‘Trapper’ Levergun is well balanced for a single point sling, and with the right sling setup you can just loop it over the barrel if you want it tight-to-body for climbing or pulling a deer carcass or whatever.

Easy to install; takes about 3 minutes, even for ME... :D ...get ‘em from Steve right here on the forum: https://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php? ... &chapter=1 8)

...and I really do like the ‘tube loading’ option, because many places I roam I walk down hundred yard sections of public road to get to trails that crisscross, and don’t want some po-po to ‘get me in trouble’ for ‘technically’ (...all phrases I learnt from my kids... :D ) breaking the law...
Much faster to unload then reload if need be.

.... but when it comes to all the gunfightin’ I do, and when I’m bein’ a po-po myself and goin’ after Bad Guys, it IS nice to be able to top off the magazine without takin the muzzle off the Bad Guy...or the gun out of battery... 8)

Leverguns really ARE ‘Tactical’.... I wouldn’t want to be a burglar or prowler and on the receiving end of that Henry, for sure....no way...!!!

Guy's
Thanks for all the comments. Really appreciate the advice also on the tape and stock. I have tried it that way but for me it never seems to work out. I have two more Bullseye sights on the way for a couple 22 rifles. One a 1966 39A Golden Mountie and the other for a New Browning BL-22 Micro Midas. Looking forward to primers coming back so I can start loading up some more ammo for her. Right now after sighting her in I'm down to 6 rounds so she is atleast loaded up if needed.

Thanks guy's again.

.

I just wish they made a Williams-FP base with a Marbles Bullseye aperture, so sighting-in would be more of a 'click-by-click' thing instead of 'drifting'. The sight is precise enough to justify meticulous adjustment. But on the flip-side of things, I guess one of the beauties of the Bullseye sight is that once it is adjusted, it is so compact, and so rugged, it just WORKS....

FYI for those unfamiliar with them, tere's the two kinds of Bullseye sights Marble's makes (from MidwayUSA.com)...

I also include them in my "Aperture Sight Options" thread on the forum -

Nice rifle. I am 6'4 and I think that they cut stocks a bit long on most American sporting rifles.

It would be nice if they did but I am happy to have them placed in the back dovetail of where the original was. Kind of in a way makes them look more authentic to me.

Scott, since most hunting with a higher caliber is done in colder weather (Cool) the shorter stock does not grab the clothing. You are correct they are a little to long.
