45-70 load with these bullets:
I puchased on this forum, some 360 gr. LBT M (Marlin) .4595" bullets for 45-70. I have about 300 of them.
They are gas checked, two grease grooves and a seperate crimping groove above them. They are flat nosed for tube loading.
Can't find them in the one loading manual I have so I thought I would ask the experts. They came for Pete's Projectiles in Talent Or if that helps. I have sent an email there but no luck yet.
Help me out with a source of data or your range of loads for such a critter.
thanks

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
Mike,
I don't have specific data, but I look for the closest thing I can find in a copper jacketed bullet and study the loads and pressures. It's generally safe shooting the loads for the copper bullets under cast lead ones because the lead bullets are more slippery and produce less pressure, ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL.
The ALL ELSE would include degree of crimp, depth of bullet in cart, etc.
Also, if you find a load for a heavier cast bullet, it can be a starting point for the lighter bullet's load. This time the caveats work the other way around because the shorter bullet leaves more case volume, and you have to be aware of the powder's preferences. Some powders do fine with a lot of empty volume, others can be dangerous.
At least it's something to start with, eh?
I think good 405g cast bullet data would be a reasonable starting point for your bullet.

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
I'm with Pete in that I like AA5744 for my .45-70 smokeless loads also, but Hodgdon's site has some good data also for leverguns. While both Hodgdon and Accurate only list 350 and 400(5) grain bullets, I'd just drop the 400 grain bullet data in there and work up a little. And both will answer an email question regarding a recommended load!

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
What rifle??
What type of load do you want??
40.0 grains of RL7 should yield 1600-1700 fps. This is a great shooting load for me in several different rifles. I use this load for a 405 cast bullet(no GC). I do not consider this a heavy load, but it is not a "wimpy" load either. This load is probably a bit heavier than I need for hunting, but it just shoots great for me. I do not think it is more effective on game(over a 1400 fps) load.
More information is needed?? Tom.

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
I typed my first post too quickly and after leaving the computer, realized I left out some very critical data.
I will be shooting the loads in my wild west guns -Marlin co-pilot lever mostly. I have BP loads for my sharps with other bullets so I am good there.
Purpose is an accurate hunting load. but I will also take suggestions on lighter loads. I shoot the 45-70 mostly for hunting purposes, deer, hogs, and the like. Taking the rifle down to texas where it may be used for a bison.

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
How fast do you want them to go? IMO, max them at 1800, 1600 being ideal. They'll go faster, but penetration might decrease over the slower ones if Linebaugh penetration tests are worth their salt.
What powders do you have on hand and like? There's probably 20 that will work well with that bullet at moderate speeds. I've got data on copper 350s which should pressure out and zip out about the same as the 360 leads.
ALSO, have you slugged your barrel yet? Are the cast bullets the right size diameter for your gun? One or two thou over is perfect.

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
Tycer, I haven't slugged my barrel yet. I will get that measurement this weekend. 16-1800 should be just fine. I have no powders other than black for 45-70, hence this thread so I could go buy some. Looked in my speer loading manual, saw the variety and saw the change depending on bullets. Speer does not do cast bullets so their data is a might slim and what they have are rather anemic loads. Stopped at Gander mountain yesterday, looked at their cast reloading book and could not see a similar bullet listed there, and the loads for the marlin lever were limited to 4 different bullets, none similar. Was hoping someone here had loaded and found success with certain powders with that bullet and ideally, in similar rifles.

Try 43-45 grains of H4350 with that bullet. We shoot a Laser-cast 350 gr. bullet such as you describe. This is a real tack driver out to 300 yards.rjohns94 wrote:I puchased on this forum, some 360 gr. LBT M (Marlin) .4595" bullets for 45-70. I have about 300 of them.

You will not find this load in any manual, however it works very well, very accurate & mild recoil.
try it you will like it

Re: 45-70 load with these bullets:
I worked up a 350g bevel base cast load from Alliant's online data for Reloder 7 and a 385g gas checked cast bullet in my 1895G. Settled on 45g for a 1770fps average and good accuracy, back off and work it up and you should be able to hit a good load.
The advice given to look at the next weight up for data has worked safely for me in the past.
