Very common issue Doc. At our club, on non-match days there's almost always a 60% vacancy of benches so this is what I do.

When I arrive I take a bench as far from anyone I can ........if someone arrives and decides they want the bench to my left...no problem...it's not my club.....IF they have semi auto's and the brass is landing on me I politely tell them to either move or change the angle of their bench.....in decades no anger has ever come from this......most shooting guys are decent, plus, our club is private and no one wants to lose their membership....it's a near impossible club to get into...like a 2-3 year wait, maybe.

To protect others from my shooting, especially during matches when every bench is taken, I have found anything that hangs on your gun is a major PITA.....I have them all and they are dusty.....both are made by Caldwell....one velcros on the gun and the other is a basket thingy similar to what I made by not as adjustable

I built this. By having one mounting point it swivels according to the gun I'm using., back and forth, in or out. The screen is also movable in its base so I can cover a 180 if so need be. I use a simple c clamp to hold it on the bench.----6

Doc the solution is simple. Shoot next to me. I always try to arrive early and take the far left position. This way no one will get hit with my brass.

Friend of mine wanted to shoot my 450 bushmaster. We met at a friends farm to use the range, grass hadn't been mowed making brass collection a bit of a pita. So I set my range box on the bench. On the 3rd shot he jumped up hooting and cussing. As he was getting ready to squeeze off the 4th shot the hot brass from the previous shot had bounced off the box and rolled to his forearm and blistered him. He now has a scar in the shape of a 450 case.

Many years ago a buddy was shooting a Ruger mini 14 to my left. when a hot piece of brass flew out of his rifle and down into my under shirt! Being lefty I'm exsposed to anybody shooting semi auto to my left. One in a million i guess! It sure did burn! It always seem like the far left bench was always taken.

I have a Caldwell brass catcher for mine, and it uses a mesh bag. I much prefer it over others that either have a hard catch container, or simply deflect brass at your feet. The bag catches all the brass, and I can easily see when it's getting full, and dump it. And at $16 it's a very inexpensive piece, and saves me policing all my spent brass.

I was at Thunder Ranch in Texas and Heidy Smith was on the line. She got a 5.56 case in her upper lady parts and she still has the scar. OUCH!

I used to use a mesh brass catcher when using the suppressed .300 Blackout SBR to keep empty cases out of the defroster vents. Seemed to work just fine.

But I switched to a bolt gun after Ruger came out with the American Rifle. No problems with flying brass now.

It pays to be proactive.....we all should keep (I do, for real) a 10" AR in .223 with us at all times in our vehicles......when you go to the club and you get an obnoxious guy next to you, just go and get your shorty AR and start ripping off multiple 30 round mags and you will magically see your immediate personal zone spread out, devoid of people....those babies are loud!

Six, my Guide Gun is loud enough to clear people away, too. At the outdoor ranges where cars can be parked up to the chain link fence 10 feet away from you, it sets off the car alarms.

Went to a range here in SoCal. Set up with a Barrett .416 (the citizens can't be trusted with anything .50 caliber). A bit later a fellow came up and set up next to me. He immediately started complaining about the noise. He went so far as to complain to the R.O. The R.O. is as crusty an old fanny burp as you'll ever find. He invited the crybaby to either relocate or leave. I got the impression the R.O. would have preferred the latter.
