Acquired a couple more leverguns a Savage 1899 & Winchester 1894

Well, I acquired a couple more lever guns over the last little while, one being a Savage 1899F carbine in .30-30, which has to be one of the nicest handling lever guns I've ever gotten. It was made in 1924, solid frame but at one time someone "checkered" the forearm which wasn't the best work, still, no extra holes drilled in it and it shoots great, especially with handloads using 165 grain Nosler ballistic tips.









The other gun I picked up, another 1894 Winchester, this one being a half mag made in 1909 and in .32-40. I've never owned a gun in that caliber before and I've owned all four of the original 1894 calibers before except .32-40 so I wanted to try it. I was able to order bullets, brass and dies, got a few test loads ready to go, can't wait to get to the range to try it out and see if it's everything I've heard about.

That's a very nice pair. I am really partial to those old Savages and have several. I'm away from my books, but have my laptop along. The Savage is most likely a model 99E. The last year for the 1899F was 1920, had a dovetailed front sight and a saddle ring. The 99E was a non-takedown, initially with 20" barrel for the 30-30, with an integral front sight. In roughly 1927 the barrel changed to 22".

Savage changed marketing terminology in 1922 and started using model 99 lingo in all their marketing material ... but for another 3 years, up into the 280K serial range, continued to stamp the barrels 1899.

Very nice pair of classic old guns, the Savage looks to be a fine shooter & i am sure the
32-40 will be also, have only shot cast bullets in a 32-40 with good results & any Savage from
1895 on up to the later 375 Win has always done me well

Very nicely done! I've never had a .32-40 either. Really admire the short magazine and a rifle-length barrel on a 94.

Congratulations David. I was fortunate enough to recently get a Model 99 myself. It isn’t nearly as old as yours but a pristine 1960. The main thing that attracted me to it was the top tang safety. My other 99’s all had the lever safety and as a lefty that was no good for me. This works well. Good shooting.
